Twenty thousand spectators attended, despite the dull weather, realising that the South African team was stronger than when it lost at Leeds, and hoping for an exciting contest. England at the Wickets. England won the toss and went in to bat. Woolley came gallantly to England’s rescue, making a third wicket stand with Wyatt, after two wickets were down for 36 runs, which beat the previous highest such partnership in Anglo-African matches. The pair put cn 245 runs in 22 hours. The visitors fielding was good. The bowling of Morkel and Quinn obviously bothered Sutcliffe and Bowley, but did not perturb Woolley, who promptly walked into it in the most tradesmanlike manner, employing a variety of strokes, establishing his partner’s confidence, and enabling him to score soundly and neatly, despite the faot that six bowlers were tried before lunch. Eventually Woolley, who hit twenty fours, skied Vincent, -whose catch concluded an innings not devoid of luck. Wy*tt signalised his first test appearance in England with a versatile well-made 113, including thirteen fours. He ended by giving the wicketkeeper an easy catch through playing late. Following are the scores: England.
