POSTAL FACILITIES FOR HIGHFIELD.

MINISTER GRANTS APPLICATION. For some considerable time past, there has been an agitation in Highfield, and also In the North End, for the establishment of post and telephone facilities. When the Hon. J. B. Donald (Postmaster-General) visited Timaru early In the year, Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., introduced a deputation, who stressed the desirability of such facilities being made available In both localities. The deputation talked the matter over among themselves and it was agreed that Highfield's claim should take precedence over that of the North End. Mr Carr is now in receipt of a letter from the Postmaster-General, dated June 11, which reads:—“ln reference to your letter of February 19, urging the establishment of post and telephone facilities at North End, Timaru, I have pleasure in informing you that authority has been given for the opening of a post and telephone office as desired.” In view of the fact that it was agreed among the deputation that Highfield should have prior claim, Mr Carr has written to the Minister asking for confirmation of the decision. Mr Carr informed a “ Herald ” reporter yesterday that he was certain that the authority which had been granted was for Highfield.
