THE RACING REVIEWED. Although the weather was dull there was a large attendance at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting. The course was fast, but the classes were slow, and over-large fields detracted considerably from the enjoyment of the racing. Outsiders had a successful day, and some big dividends were posted, in one case a winner returning close on half a century. Several spills occurred, but in every instance these were purely accidental. The star performer of the day was Author Jinks, who conceded starts ranging up to 103 yards in the Rakaia Handicap,* and, after having to cover a lot of ground, won brilliantly. For the Improvers’ Handicap, in which the class was very slow, twentythree horses lined up. Kelp was a short-priced favourite, with Nell De Beau a long way better backed of the others. Glenlake and Kelp led out from Becky de Oro, but just after leavng the straight Kate Logan (from 36 behind) dashed to the front and led past the seven furlongs post from Kelp, Glenlake, Becky de Oro and Purser. Half a mile from home Kate Logan and Kelp had drawn out six lengths from a bunch headed by Glenlake and Purser, and at that stage Kelp looked a winner. At the home turn, however. Purser moved up, and joining Kelp a furlong from home the two-year-old came on to win nicely by a couple of lengths from the favourite, who lasted just long enough to beat Levanter by a neck. Glenlake was a couple of lengths further back, just in front of Cyone. The winner is a halfbrother to Succession, and looks as if he will be a good advertisement for Man c’ War. Frances de Oro went off well, but broke badly before covering a hundred yards. So many trotters were accepted for ir the Allenton Handicap that the totalisator dial was overloaded, and there were live brackets on this accrunt. Admiral Bingen, who won the f-st race or. the new Tixnaru track, was f-c popular pick, with King Oscar a good second choice. Decrepe made play Pom Blue and Gold, Bonora and Decc'- Ril. Passing the mile Deceitful and

Decrepe were half a dozen lengths clear of Blue and Gold, with Goodwood, Accumulator and Admiral Bingen following in that order. Decrepe broke going to the far turn, where Admiral Bingen took charge from Deceitful, Blue and Gold and Accumulator. A tangle cost Deceitful some ground, and at the top Admiral Bingen had run right away from Blue and Gold, Deceitful and Accumulator. The favourite was eased up in the straight to win by a length from Accumulator, who finished strongly ten lengths ahead of Blue and Gold. King Oscar and Deceitful were at the head of the others. Bonora, Rustle and Eva Reta got into a scrimmage and lost their drivers. Bay Nut was the only withdrawal from the Durbar Handicap, for which the favoured candidates were Evelyn Locanda 1023, Linkman 822, Wrackler 741, and Shadowland 487. Matagouri soon ran past June de Oro and led to the straight the first time from June de Oro, Linkman, Firpo and Kiowa. Passing the .stand the leaders were Kiowa, Evelyn Locanda, Linkman, June de Oro, Neerson and Kotuku Jack. An accident was narrowly averted here. Evelyn Locanda tried to bore in and caused June de Oro to break, but an ugly-looking situation was got out of safely. Kiowa led at the mile from Linkman, Evelyn Locanda, Kotuku Jack, June de Oro and Neerson. Trampfast closed on the leading bunch at the far turn, where Linkman was alongside Kiowa. Linkman took charge at the top, and led into the home stretch from Evelyn Locanda and Trampfast. At one stage it looked as if the trotter would assume command, but Linkman easily held him off and came on to win by nearly two lengths from Evelyn Locanda, who was the same distance ahead of Omaha. Avenger and Trampfast were both close up. Kotuku Jack broke at the home turn, and caused Shadowland to lose his driver. Both first and second horses reduced their handicaps by over three seconds, and Omaha, who finished resolutely, was unlucky in registering his fastest time to date for third place. Wrackler, who has had a hard season, was never dangerous.

Two withdrawals left an unwieldy field of 28 to contest the Harvest Handicap, and again bracketing of horses from different stables had to be resorted to. The Lady Cello-Rap combination was supported to the extent of 810 tickets, with Tumatakuru 469, and the Young Bingen-Wild Voyage bracket 402 next in favour. Sumiy Bob edged right across the track at the start, but fortunately did not cause serious trouble. Return Voyage and Lady Cello led past the stands from Auto Minto, Rap, lone and Young Bingen, and there was no appreciable change in the leading division as they ran to the seven furlong mark. Then lone joined Lady Cello and Return Voyage, the trio going on together, well clear of Rap, Auto Minto and Tumatakuru. Lady Cello led to the straight from Tumatakuru, lone and Return Voyage, with Gold Author looking most danderous of a big bunch behind the leaders. lone finished best, and drew out to win by nearly two lengths from Tumatakuru, who saved second money by a neck from Wild Voyage, who flashed up fast on the outside. Lady Cello and Rap were both close up. Golden Author broke and fell a furlong from home, and Loiterer, Rollo, Delightful, Auto Minto and Denver’s Doll were involved in an ugly-looking crash, which miraculously did not have very serious results. The drivers concerned were L. A. McNeill, F. Holmes, O. E. Hooper, W. J. Gudsell, R. B. Berry and F. G. Holmes, and only the two last-named drove again during the afternoon.

Mountain Ore was backed like one of J. Grice’s good things in the Autumn Handicap, the other popular chance being M. B. Edwards’ Arikitoa-Rafa combination. Most of the limit horses were slow to begin, only Great Huon leaving smartly, and at the end of a hundred yards Mountain Ore was in second place. Running down the straight the first time Mountain Ore was showing daylight from Roldena and Great Huon, with Torchlight, Kautoma and Devon Child leading the remainder. Torchlight joined Mountain Gre and Roldena soon after reaching the back, and at the seven furlongs Roldena and Torchlight were three lengths in advance of Mountain Ore, Devon Child being five lengths further back. Roldena was stopping when the far turn was reached, and at the top of the curve Torchlight and Mountain Ore had drawn clear, their nearest competitors being Roldena, Devon Child and Rafa. Mountain Ore and Torchlight had the finish to themselves. Mountain Ore was alongside Torchlight a hundred yards from home and two or three strides from the post appeared to have his head in front, but Torchlight’s driver applied the whip and snatched the victory by half a head. Alpine Melody was third, six or eight lengths away, with Rafa fourth. Torchlight, who had finished out of a place earlier in the day, carried only thirteen tickets. An explanation of his. improved form was asked for, and was accepted, it being stated that he met with interference in the first race. Mountain Ore’s backers were unlucky.

The home-trained mare Aileen Wood with M. Holmes at the tiller, was installed favourite for the two-mile trotters’ race, carrying about £l5O more than Accumulator, with Kereta next in demand. After going a furlong Bon Elect supplanted Kereta in the lead, and rap down the straight attended by Kereta, Accumulator, Aileen Wood and Oval. The order was the same as they trotted along the back, the others nearest to hand being Dillon S. and St. Petrox. Kereta headed Bon Elect after rounding the far turn, the rotation then being Kereta, Bon Elect, Aileen Wood, Accumulator and Oval. Oval was challenged a furlong from home by Kereta and Accumulator, the lastnamed securing the verdict by half a length from Kereta. who broke inside the last furlong, and galloped past the judge half a length in advance of Oval. Aileen Wood, who appeared to receive a check at the home turn, was close up fourth, Bon Elect being fifth. The stewards decided to distance Kereta for galloping, and awarded second and third places, respectively, -to Oval and Aileen Wood.

Tactless was first selection for the Rakaia Handicap, but betting took a wider range than usual, and half a dozen others—Becgy Mine, Evelyn Locanda, Author Jinks. Kiowa and Meb —all commanded solid backing. Sylvie Logan swerved at the start and failed to go away, .and Dundas Boy broke up badly at the end of a furlong. Listen In set the pace to Slump. Becky Mine. Vikota, Mac Dillon, and Tactless. When the seven furlongs post was reached, Vikota was showing the v/av to Mac Dillon and Slump. Author Jinks, who gathered speed quickly after passing the mile peg, was moving very fast, and

at the far turn he war. within thirty yards of the leaders, although he still had a dozen horses in front of him. Vikota. Mac Dillon. Slump and Tactless led the bunch to the straight, but Author Jinks, although forced out very wide by the spreading field, was making his hoofs twinkle, and half-way down the straight the little fellow had his race won. He attempted to loaf as soon as he hit the front, and had to be shaken up to win by half a length from the Southlander Slump. Hector’s Own war. two or three lengths away, just

beating Evelyn Locanda for the minor place. Author Jinks recorded 2.42 3-5 for the trip, a fine performance considering that he had to go round nearly twenty horses.

The saddle performers were given their only opportunity of the day in the Farewell Handicap. Fair Dillon 879, Routine 797, Heroic 661, and Mavis Wood were accorded most support in an even betting race. Bing Boy, Pearl Logan and Honest Ned all mixed their gait at the start or in the initial stage of the race. Mavis Wood led off from Roger Lyon and Heroic, and at the end of half a mile Heroic was in charge from Mavis Wood and Roger Lyon, with Routine and Nonsuit handy. Heroic looked to be doing it easily after he reached the straight, but he did not respond when challenged by Mavis Wood, who drew out a hundred yards from the post and won by half a length from Young Bingen, who came fast on the rails and beat Black Wattle by a length for second money. Heroic was fourth, a couple of lengths away. Mavis Wood formerly raced in the colours of B. Grice, but is now trained (and was ridden) by L. G. Grice, at Eiffelton.
