TROLLEY BUSES.

Attention has been drawn to the trackless trolley bus by suggestions for the improvement of feeder services m the Auckland suburbs. Experience with this class of vehicle in New Zealand has been so limited that no data giving comparisons with electric trams or buses is available. It is pf interest, however, that trackless trolley buses are on the increase in England, and last year twenty local authorities and one private company operated this class of vehicle in Great Britain. The Ministry of Transport has issued a. report covering observations of 319 trolley buses in 1927-28. A total of 8,23,076 miles were run and 80,112,970 passengers were carried. The average seating capacity of the trolley buses is 35 passengers. Wolverhampton has the largest fleet, a total of 49 vehicles having carried 14.617,675 passengers in the year, and averaged 17d in receipts per car mile. The Ministry’s survey shows an average income of 14.3 c! a mile and a gross working expenditure of 11. Old. The net receipts are thus 8.29 d.
