CASUALTIES.

THE WESTPORT MISHAP. By Tel/syraph—Pr-ass Association. WESTPORT, March. 1. In connection with the accident at the Stockton Aline yesterday, it is reported that the driver of the loco, Shearer, when he found that the brake would not work, jumped clear. This induced 12 others to do likewise, and all were more or less severely injured. The five men sent to hospital are reported to -be progressing favourably. An inquiry is being Feld to-day by the Inspector of Alines, and the Public Works Department . Only the promptness of Cook, the second man on the loco, in applying the emergency brake, saved all on board from being killed. When the emergency brake was applied, the loco left the lines. The company is reticent until the inquiry is completed.
