TIMARU ALPINE CLUB.

GENERAL MEETING. A general meeting of the Timaru Alpine Club was held last evening. The meeting, which was presided over by the president (Fir W. H. Walton), was called for the purpose of adopting club rules, and the election of officers. The chairman stated that the subcommittee, set up at a previous meeting, had drafted a set of rules, which would be submitted that evening for confirmation. For those who had not attended the previous meeting, Mr Walton explained the purpose for which the club had been formed—the fostering of alpine sports and climbing generally. A branch was being formed in Auckland, with Professor Algie, a wellknown alpinist, in charge of affairs. The formation of such clubs would do a great deal towards opening up mountainous regions, by the erection of huts at suitable places. In recent times, very few expeditions had been made into these lesser-known regions. The erection of huts would provide a stronger inducement for travellers to make trips that had so far not been made. There was an unlimited field of sport to be opened up. Unless a start was made, the sport would not be furthered in a manner to provide enjoyment for New Zealanders, as well as overseas visitors.

The chairman then read a lengthy set of rules, proposed by the subcommittee.

Mr H. Coxhead said the sub-com-mittee should be congratulated on the comprehensive set of rules drawn up. He was quite sure that events would prove that the club would meet with every success. After a short discussion, it was decided that the rules, as submitted, be adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected —President, Mr W. H. Walton (reelected); A'ice-president, Mr F. J. Rolleston; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Alport; committee: Messrs C. L. Mahan, R. G. Wilson, L. Murray, and Miss E. Edgar-Jones.
