MU GEORGE PHILLIPS. One of Temuka’s early settlers, in tho poison of Mr George Phillips died m Dunedin on Saturday morning. The deceased was well-know n in Temuka up to some few years ago, when he retired, and went to live with various members oi his family. Up to three weeks ago. Mr Phillips had enjoyed the best of health, and was never known to require medical advice. He was taken ill last month, and. on medical advice, became a patient in Dunedin Public Hospital. Ho underwent an operation, and passed away as stated. The Jate Mr Phillips was born in Gloucester, England, 82 years ago, and followed the occupation of a farmer. He married Miss Margaret Lane, in Berkshire, England, and a few years later the young couple left for New Zealand in tho immigrant ship “Peeress,” arriving at Tirnaru on July 16, 18/3. The family, consisting of the parents and three children, landed in surf boats. The family came to Teniuka straightaway, and the late Mr Phillips obtained employment on railway works, the railway between Timaru and i’emuka being then in process of construction. Among the principal jobs on this work in which the deceased was engaged was the building of the bridges over the Temuka and Opihi ■rivers. On .the completion of this work, he obtained employment as foreman of the Temuka Bond Board’s outside staff. Later he obtained a similar position under the Temuka Borough Council, and was subsequently caretaker and sexton of the Temuka Cemetery, positions he held for eighteen years.

Deceased was a member of the Temuka Volunteer Uifle Brigade. a* froon became a proficient marksman. He Was a foundation member of the 1.0.0. F. Alexandrovna Lodge, and was co-trustee, with the late Mr James Blyth, who passed away in Temuka a few months ago. He took a keen interest in tho local 1.0.G.T. Lodge, and was trustee of that body for a number of years. He was a member of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, and was regarded as an expert in piscatorial matters. Deceased's wife died nine years ago. There were eleven children of the marriage. nine of whom survive, their names being: Mrs W. Oliver (Temuka), Mrs A. Hutt (Geraldine), Mr Harry Phillips (Temuka), Mr John Phillips (Washdyke), Mr Walter Phillins (Temuka), Mr Edward Phillips (Mosgiel), Mr Reube Phillips (Masterton), Mr Frank Phillips (Christchurch), and Mr Noah Phillips (Timaru).

The funeral took place yesterday aftirnoon at Temuka, there being a large attendance, including the Mayor (Mr T. E. Gunnion), prominent citizens, and members of the Alexandrovna Lodge. The Rev. G. N. Watson conducted the Service, after which Bro. J. K. Young, P.G., read the burial service of the Oddfellows’ Lodge, and the brethren present paid their last tribute to their departed brother by dropping a sprig of evergreen into the grave. The bearers were: Bros. J. L. Young, O. Norton, H. R. Woodham, and W. Seeler. Many beautiful floral tokens were sent by sympathising friends. CHILDREN’S MUSIC FESTIVAL in connection with the new proposals put forward by the secretaries (Messrs B. Hughes and H. B. Strange), a very encouraging response has been received and the following schools have intimated their intention of joining in the festival: Temuka, St. Joseph’s, Native, Milford. Orari, Pleasant Point ami Arundel. Mr Vernon Griffiths, of Christchurch, has consented to select the most suitable music, and is preparing complete instructions, a copy of which will be sent to the schools that have alread yentered. PERSONAL. Miss Ruby Eagle, of Wellington, is spending a holiday with her parents, at Winchester. Mrs Roy Frisby, Suva, is staying with relatives in Temuka, prior to her return to Fiji. Mrs C. lv. Innes-Waiker, Kenya Colony, arrived in Temuka on Saturday, and is the guest of Mrs Sewell, “Lakeside Grange,” Waitohi. Miss Margaret Brunton will leave to-day to spend her annual vacation in Christchurch. TENNIS.
