S. P. C. A. The judges (Messrs D. McLennan and B. H. Low) have made their awards in the Essay Competition amongst South Canterbury Schools, promoted by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The awards are as follows: SECONDARY SCHOOLS. Class 1.- —Wilfred Baxter (Temulca) 1, Dan Hopkinson (Temuka) 2. Class 11.-—Chas. Telford (Temuka) 1, Patricia Deßenzy (Geraldine) 2. PRIMARY SCHOOLS. Std. VI. —David Guild (Milford) 1, Mable Rehu (Arowhenua Native) 2. Std. V.—John Davies (Geraldine) 1, Gwen Davies (Arowhenua Native) 2. Std. ll.—Albert Cox (South) 1, Barbara Lee (Temuka) 2. LICENSING COMMITTEE. At the conclusion of the business of the Licensing Committee at Temuka on Tuesday, the chairman, Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., said that, as this would be the last meeting of the year, he would like to convey greetings to the members of the Committee, the members of the legal profession, and the Police and the Court official. Their association with the legal profession and the members of the Police Force had always been most agreeable, and he thought they could look back on the year now almost gone with a certain amount of pleasure, and they could look forward to a bright and happy New Year. Mr Gunnion returned thanks on behalf of the members of the Committee, and reciprocated the good wishes expressed by the chairman. Tho Committee recognised that they had in Mr Orr-Walker a good man, and they hoped he would remain with them a long time.

Mr Evans said that, as the senior member of the Committee, he would like to thank the chairman for the kind wishes expressed. He also wished to extend felicitations to the Police, the members of the legal profession, and Mr A. E. Reynolds, the Clerk of the Court. Mr Raymond also briefly returned thanks.

BOWLING The following will represent Temuka in the match against Park A at Temuka, to-morrow: Abbott, Levens, Franklin, McLeod (s). Mackie, Ferguson, Pierce, Edwards (s). The following will represent the Temuka Cricket Club juniors in their match to-morrow: Smart, Gribble, Jackson, Blyth, Edwards, Pohill. Dwan, Andrews, Gale, King, Salmon (captain). Emergency: B. Gibb. PERSONAL. Miss M. O’Malley and Mr J. O’Malley (Henley), and Mr E. Tavendale (Waimate), who have been the guests of Mrs Horgan, Hornbrook Street, have left for the south. TENNIS. The following will represent the Temuka Tennis Club in a match to be played against the S.C.L.T.A. team on Saturday next, at Temuka: Men.—Messrs W. Pearse, H. Lee, Murray, J. A. Smart, G. Manchester, G. J. Walker. Emergencies: Ritchie and B. Oldfield. Ladies.—Misses R. Pearse, N. Poultney, F. Pearse, G. Oldfield, R. Comer and Mrs Dick. Emergencies: Miss I-lancox, Miss Slattery and Miss Bremner.
