SPORTING.

SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

IMPROVED CONDITIONS FOR SECOND DAY.

Rain which continued with varying density throughout Friday night and the early hours of Saturday morning, did not augur well for the second day of the S.C.J.C. autumn meeting, but there was a sudden temporary improvement during the forenoon, and the racing was conducted under greatly improved conditions. The'sky wore a threatening aspect at times during the day, but the rain held off until the last race had been run. The attendance was considerably larger than on the opening day, and the totalisator handled £14,715, compared with £13,748 oil the corresponding day of the 1927 autumn meeting. The turnover for tho two days was £24,0 62, against £22,911 a year earlier, when the weather conditions were almost similar. The going was very heavy when racing commenced, but the track dried considerably under the influence of the sun, and there was less mud than had been anticipated. The various officials again discharged their duties witli efficiency and despatch, and the Club did not lose any of its prestige as a well-managed institution. • With the track conditions very similar to those in evidence on the opening day, it was only to be expected that horses which had run well or badly on Friday, would show similar form on the second day, and m most cases the running was consistent. Battle Colours and King Balboa again led the field home in tho Autumn Handicap, a concession of 41bs proving insufficient to enable the Southlander to turn the tables, though he beat the others even more decisively than on the first day. Aberfeldy proved too good class for the opposition in the hurdle race, and Booster just failed to concede 351 b in the Pareora Handicap to Antrim Boy, who came home by a shorter route. The Babe, ridden vigorously for a full circuit, accounted for the steeplechase, but there might have been a different result had Wharncliffe been allowed to run along in the early stages. Gay Sonnet, who had run well in the Timaru Cup, sent her admirers home in happy mood by leading practically all the way in the Doncaster Handicap, and giving C. Emerson his third win for the day.

Again there was a big field for the Hurdles, but Aberfeldy, who was unplaced on the first day,, was made an odds-on favourite, with Royal Land and Bonatic in most request of the remainder. Rangatahi, Royal Land and Heisler led to the first obstacle, and at the stand Royal Land, Heisler and Red Heather were three lengths clear of Scion and Rangatahi. Turning into the back I-leisler and Red Heather were leading from Royal Land, Rangatahi, Scion -and Aberfeldy. At the far turn the'; lot were in close order except Krasnoi and Rangiawhio. Bonatic and Red Heather were in charge at the top, and they ran to the home turn attended by Scion, Royal Land and Aberfeldy. At the last hurdle Red Heather, Bonatic, Royal Land, Aberfeldy and Scion were in a bunch.. was leading half a furlong from home, but Aberfeldy came again and beat him home by threequarters of a length. Royal Land was a length and a half away, just beating Scion and Bonatic. Tarleton fell at the last fence.

Fair Exchange 882 and Malmsey 8 27, dominated the betting on the April Stakes, there being a big drop in the figures to Impertinence 379. Star Raid got the- best of the start, and immediately gained a break of three lengths. Before he had gone a furlong, however, he was joined by Fortune’s Wheel,. String-bow and The Bailiff. At the top Stringbow and The Bailiff drew away, and Impertinence moved into third place just ahead of Fortune’s Wheel and Malmsey. Malnjsey joined the leaders at the home turn,' and taking charge at the top of the straight, won comfortably by two lengths. Fair Exchange, came fast from the rear, and fifty yards from home had a length advantage over The Bailiff, but his rider eased up rather soon and The Bailiff came again and was defeated by only a peck for second money. Phastar Was a length further back. Again in the Pareora Handicap speculators confined their attention mainly :to two runners, Booster 1373 and Solrose 1003 both being at restricted prices. Money Mine, Apple Dighton and Booster were together for a furlong, well clear of Solrose, but running round the top Apple Dighton drew out frbm Ronaki, Booster and Money Mine, Ronaki having moved up from the rear. Ronaki led into the straight from Booster, Money Mine and Solrose. Antrim Boy, who hugged the rails when the others swung wide at the corner, was on terms with Booster, Solrose and Ronaki half way down the straight, and finishing best the ex-Aucklander won by a bit over a length from Booster, who beat Ronaki by a neck. Money Mine and Solrose were both very close up. Following first day’s form, backers declared for Battle Colours and King BalbOa in the Autumn Handicap. King Balboa, Don Jose, Fresco and Lucy Locket led off from a despatch in which all began well except Carnot and Baldowa. Lucy Locket failed to hold her place, and drifted back to the rear division with Tliorndale and Baldowa. Carnot soon made up ground, and at the five furlongs was on terms with King Balboa in the lead, the pair being attended by Overhaul and Front Rank, with Battle Colours next. Carnot retired at the top, leaving King Balboa to show the way to the turn to Front Rank, Battle Colours and Overhaul. Battle Colours challenged King Balboa at the top of tho straight, and after a short battle drew out to win with something in reserve by a length and a half from the southerner. Front Rank was three or four lengths away, a neck in front of Fresco. Tintoretto was a close fifth.

A baker’s dozen lined up for the Temuka Hack Handicap. Malmsey, who was penalised 71b, but claimed a 51b allowance, was the popular selection, but the Carinthia-I-leather Doon bracket and Meadow Lark were well backed. Solgele was quickest away, but soon gave place to Solfello and Sea Gay, who led round the top from Solgele, Meadow Lark and Grey Find). Solfello and Sea Gay were first into the straight, closely followed by Grey Finch, Solgele and Carinthia, with Puff moving tip fast. A bit further on Malmsey also joined in. A good race resulted in Puff securing, the verdict by a short length from Malmsey, who finished strongly and beat Grey Finch by a neck for second money. Solgele was fourth, another length away, with Carinthia next. Jarretiere declined to leave the post, and Heather Doon lost some lengths at the start:.

There were nine runners in the Wai-iti Steeplechase, and punters, sticking to their slogan, installed the dividend-payers of the previous day favourites. It was, however, an even

betting race, the leading figures being Royal Wink 6 51, Royal Fashion 5 79, Wharncliffe 518, Jovial 440 and The Babe-Mainspring couplet 4 00. Jovial was quickest to begin, but was soon joined by Royal Wink and Monko. Turning into the straight the first time the order was Royal Wink, Jovial, Royal Fashion, and this trio ran to the stand double together. Royal Fashion stood off too far at the first leg, and unshipped her rider. This left Royal Wink and Jovial well clear of Sir Wai, Mainspring and The Babe. The last-named was being stirred up to catch the leaders. Racing over the fence near the seven furlong post, Royal Wink and Jovial were four or five lengths ahead of The Babe, with Sir Wai and Mainspring a similar distance away. Wharncliffe, who was held back at the start, and had been running in the, rear with Whipcord, moved up along the back, and when Royal Wink and Jovial ran round the top half a dozen lengths clear of The Babe, Mainspring and Wharncliffe were within striking distance. The Babe closed on the two leaders at the home turn, and at the last fence he had headed Jovial and was not far from Royal Wink. In a hard finish The Babe wore Royal Wink down and de-’ feated him by nearly a length. Wharncliffe was travelling fast in third place about eight lengths away, four lengths in front of Jovial. Sir Wai ran off at the last fence, but Mainspring and Whipcord completed the course. The Babe was under pressure for the last mile, and answered the calls of his rider very gamely. Wharncliffe would have been dangerous had he been allowed to keep nearer the leaders in the first mile.

The Beaconsiield Hack Handicap attracted seven runners, and a favourite was found in the first day winner Rotor, who was about 500 units in better demand than Amor or Wild Work. Wild Work and Amor were first to break the line, and going up the back they were two lengths in advance of Rotor, Green Cloth and Crossbow. Solzia moved up at the far turn, and as they raced round the bend Wild Work, Solzia and Amor , were running in’ that order, with Rotor next. There was no change as they swung into the straight, and Wild Work, whose rider did not let up a moment, won by a length and a half from Solzia, who beat Rotor by a length. Amor was a poor fourth. Wild Work had not won a race for several months, but in a small field she is likely to improve her record. Rotor was nursed for a final run, but found his impost just too substantial after getting into a bad patch near the home turn. Assurance was the only withdrawal from the Seadown Handicap, leaving a field of ten, three of which had raced earlier in the day. Gay Sonnet 1282 and Overhaul 1241 commanded most support, the other fancied candidates being Flying. Mist 73 8 and Mime 675. Mime, Gold Mint and Fairy Herald were troublesome at the barrier, and held up the start for some minutes. Overhaul, Gay Sonnet and Sprinkler began smartly, and at the. end of two furlongs Gay Sonnet and Sprinkler were showing daylight from Ronaki, Overhaul, Mime and Gold Mint, who were bunched. At the top of the bend Gay Sonnet was followed by Mime and Sprinkler, with Ronaki and Overhaul piloting the bunch. , Gay Sonnet led into the straight from Mime, and' was not troubled to win by three lengths, Mime beating Tintoretto by a couple of lengths. There was a good finish for third place between Tintoretto, Overhaul and Ronaki, who had necks between them. Once she hit the front Gay Sonnet never looked like being beaten, and she is very well just now. Mime battled on into second place for the second time at the meeting. Flying Mist appeared to meet with more than her share of trouble in the running. Details are appended:
