ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

H.M.S. DUNEDIN v. SOUTH CANTERBURY. The first representative ' game this season was played at Anzac Reserve on Saturday afternoon, between a South Canterbury team and players from H.M.S. Dunedin. The recent heavy rains made the pitch, sodden. The band of H.M.S. Dunedin was in attendance, 'and rendered selections, prior to the start of the game, and during the interval. The bank was lined with spectators, the attendance being the largest at a. soccer game for a, few seasons. Considering the state of the ground, the game was an excellent exhibition, the Navy winning by 3 goals to 2. The game was refereed by the Rev. C. W. Duncumb. . The teams lined up as follows: H.M.S. After some exchanges between the backs, which kept play near midfield. South Canterbury attacked. Hill handled in the penalty'box, and a kick was taken hv Logie.' Logie netted, but an infringement by MoAuliil'e, necessitated the kick being re-taken! Logie again made no mistake, the home team being the first to score. The Navy lads konfc possession from the centre, and Clark brought the scores level.i with a shot from close in. Wynne conceded a corner from a shot bv Milne, and the first spell ended one all.

No ground was gained by South Canterbury with a free kick, the Navv resuming the attack. Logie conceded a corner, Butler clearing. Davies got possession and passed out

to Weston. A free kick against Thatcher was kicked out by Milne before the home team got possession. The sailors’ front lino combined well, but Boyd broke up the attack. Weston showed a good turn of speed, and from far out shot high. Newnham parried the shot, but Hibbert smartly trapped the return, and netted with a nice effort, making the score 2-1. The home vanguard worked the ball down, Davies shooting high over the bar. The game was fast and open, both goals being visited in turn. Scott equalised from inside the penalty area. The Navy goal-keeper saved a header from his own right back, and the defence on both sides indulged in long kicks. Reid made an opening, drawing the defence, and passed to Milne, the inside left, who, after eluding McAulift'e, transferred to Archer, who beat Wynne from ten yards out, the score being 3-2. in favour of tbe Navy. South Canterbury made a determined onslaught, A. Allingham missing by inches from a corner-kick. A long kick by Logie kept the visiting defence busy, and Newnham earned a round of applause, saving a high shot from AVestoii. An attack by the visitors saw Wynne bold a hard drive from Milne.
