STREET DAYS.

To tlie Editor of the “Timaru Herald” I am informed that the Council, at its last meeting, decided to eliminate two objects for which “Street Days 71 have been lield in the past, and having taken a vote if was resolved that in future no street days would be allowed in which to collect funds for the orphanages, or Cruelty to Animals Society. The other objects, namely, the Rlunket Society, Ambulance, Mary Raymond Nurses, Returned Soldiers’ and tho Mayor’s Coal and Blanket Fund, are all quite laudable objects and, of course, should receive the support of the public, but I venture to suggest that none of them need ns much money to keep going as the orphanages, and it seems extraordinary to me that anybody should put anything in the way of preventing money being raised for such a great national work as the care of orphaned and destitute children. It is a truism that “t’ne children of to-day ■ are the citizens of to-morrow,” and the future of this country dopoixls on tho right upbringing of the child to-day, and orphanages are taking children which might otherwise be liabilities to our country, and making an asset of them lor our New Zealand. If the Councillors of Timaru are family men, it is beyond my comprehension that they should place anything in the way of assisting children. I hope to hear that the Council will repent and allow “Street Days” for those who, through no fault of their own, are unable to help themselves. —I am, etc., H. M. BANNEHR, Organising Secretary, St. Saviour’s Orphanages, Christchurch, April 18.
