Mrs G. Murray, “Braemar,” returned home yesterday. Mrs F. G. Saville, l'airhe, will leave Wellington on the 15th by the “Manuka,” for Melbourne. Miss Wheeler, Gisborne, will arrive to-day to stay with her sister, Mrs Leslie o‘Callaghan, Wai-iti Road. Mrs A. H. Richards and Miss Halsey, Harper Street, will leave to-day on a short visit to Christchurch. The Rev. J. A. Wilson and Mrs Wilson, Elizabeth .Street, will leave to-day for Christchurch. Mrs J. R. Loughnan, Fairlic, is t|ie guest of Mrs Bernard Tripp, “Oriel°Mrs C. H. Gresson, Selwyn Street, will leave for Christchurch on Wednesnesday, to attend the Christ’s College sports. Banknote designing was once tho close preserve of men, but women have broken down the barriers there as elsewhere. Countess Antoinette Khcvcn-huller-Metsc.h. a member of one of Austria’s oldest aristocratic families, iccentlv submitted a design for a banknote, and had it promptly accepted by the Austrian Ministry of Finance. According to a recent English paper, Joan Sutherland began to write stories while at school, and spent her dress allowance and sold her jewellery to pay for tho publication of her first novel. Sho studied singing in Paris, living on 25 francs a week, and got her first concert engagement and her second novel accepted on the same day.

On Saturday, a very pleasant afternoon was spent at tho Girls’ Hostel. 'Church Street, when tho board of directors for the Y.W.C.A. gave a welcome to Miss E. Stociker, the newly-appointed organising secretary. Airs Alelville Jameson received the guests, and Airs W. Tait, Airs N. D. Afangos, and Aliss K. Byrne gave a delightful musical programme. Those present included: —Ah's R. H. Rhodes, Airs Edgar .Tones, Airs Tuinbull, Airs Ensor, Airs W. Priest, Airs Burns, Airs Laidlnw, Airs Holdgatc, Airs T. Stinson, Airs W. Afternoon tea was dispensed by tho Board members. On Saturday afternoon, the Timaru Tennis Club’s courts were declared open, and a great number of tennis enthusiasts and tlieir friends enjoyed a pleasant afternoon’s outing. WEDDING. HISLOP—PARIvES. A very pretty wedding was solemnised at the Presbyterian Church, Anderson’s Bay, Dunedin, on 14tii September, the contracting parties being Lilias Frances Parkes, of Timaru, only daughter of Airs and the late Air AY. J. Parkes, and Gessenox A. Hislop, eldest son of Air and Airs J. Hislop, of Timaru. The Rev. G. 11. Jupp officiated. Tho bride, who entered the church on tho arm of her uncle, Air F. R. Webster, looked very sweet in a beautiful frock of salmon crepe de chcnc, heavily beaded in silver and crystal, with shoos to tone. Sho wore the usual veil and wreath of orange blossom, and carried a shower bouquet of spring flowers and maidenhair fern. Airs H. : J. Whitehead, of -Anderson’s Bay, attended as matron of honour, and wore a dainty frock of powder blue satin, with crinoline hat and shoes en suite. She carried a bouquet of spring flowers and maidenhair fern. Air 11. J. Whitehead, of Anderson’s Bay, carried out the duties of best man. After tho ceremony tlie bride’s aunt, Airs E. R. Webster, entertained the guests at the Seaview Tea Rooms. Tlie usual toasts were honoured.

Later in the day tho happy couple left by car for the north. The bride’s travelling frock was of mauve repp, with hat and shoes to tone. Air and Airs Hislop’s future home will be in Dunedin.
