WEST SCHOOL.

ANNUAL GALA. Favoured with lino weather, the Committed, etaclicrs and pupils of the Timaru West School were able to make their annual gala, which w r as held m the school grounds on Saturday afternoon, a marked success. For some weeks energetic committees had been making preparations lor the event, and the generous response made by parents and others interested in the school resulted in a splendid display of'goods being made. The playing ground at the back of tho school was set off in stalls, all of which were attractively decorated, and the goods displayed to the best advantage. The range of articles lor the. selection of the public, who were present during the afternoon in exceptionally large numbers, was a wide one, and as quality was in evidence as well as quantity, business was brisk during the three hours in wdiich tho gala, was in progress. Although the lunctiou was timed to open at 2 o’clock, some of the stalls were working briskly before that hour, and so an official opening wis dispensed with. In addition to the work, fancy, produce, cake, sweets, books, jumble and other stalls, various competitions were conducted, and all of these w'ere well patronised. An afternoon-tea room was arranged inside tho school, and the workers controlling this section of tho function were given very littlo rest. ‘By closing time an almost total clearance had been effected, and the hinds of the school should benefit materially. On Saturday night a euchre party and danco was held, and this function was also -Well patronised. Most of the card tables were occupied, and some very keen contests took place. The dance hall was well filled, those present thoroughly enjoying themselves. Tho heads of the various stalls -were: Fancy, Mrs Gumming; work, Mrs Segar; novelty, Mrs T. Currie; book, Mrs F. S. Cave; cake, Mrs Gabites; produce, Mrs Foster and Mr W. H. Thompson; jumble Mrs Coates and Mrs Hardie; ices and drinks. Messrs Manger and Rollinson ; sweets, ladies of the staff; refreshments, Mrs Burns; sideshows, Mr J. Price. Following are tho results of competitions:—Competition open to primary schools: decorative, original costume. June Iteid 1, Doris Petrie 2. Fancy costume: Mavis Middlemiss 1, Marjorio Davis 2. Bicycle: Kathleen Beargcmore .1, Clara Hayward 2. Vehicle, Joyce Burns 1, Cyril Owens 2, Gordon Nieliol 3, Margaret Nichol h.c. Cookery:—Jems, B. Cunningham 1. Rock cake, Lina Mackny. Scones, Lora Ncilson 1, Phyllis Taylor 2. rolls, Ivy Rodgers. Pikelets, May Hutcheson 1, Eunice Latimer 2. Shortbread, Isa Morton.' Sponge, Jean Chapman 1, Phyllis Taylor 2. Industrial:-—Rest article from sugar bags, Phyllis Taylor 1, Silwyn Bryant 2. Best article from petrol tins, Robert Taylor. Wooden toy, Tom Keene. Paper flowers (three varieties)," Doris Petrie 1, Marjorie Hutcheson 2. One variety, Sihvyn Bryant 1, Marjorie Hutcheson 2. Other competitions resulted as follows : —No. 1, Gollvwog, W. H. Thompson; No. 2, Gollvwog, Miss P. Broadhurst; nightdress, M. Hay; box of silver spoons, D. Hardie; dumpty, Mrs J. Mu u ton; Christmas cake, Mrs Boorcr; cushion, Mrs Ncwlands; flip screen, Mrs J. Houston; Christmas cake _ (weight guessing) , Airs S. Gibb, G. Ivoller and T. Currie all guessed within haU'-an-ounco of the correct weight; bagatelle, 11. Head P, J. Rodgers 2, Miss Thompson 3. Tho euchre competition, he'd in the evening, resulted as follows:: —Mr Payne 1, Mrs D. Pearce 2, Mrs Smithers 3. Consolation, Mrs Payne and Mr Young. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Williams and Mr Campbell.
