HOCKEY.
GERALDINE LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. The Geraldine County Sub-Associa-tion held its annual tournament on Thursday in splendid weather. Although the ground was in a very rough state, many of the games were really good, particularly in the senior grade. The Fairlie High School teams, easily the smallest players on the ground, displayed a good knowledge of the game, and deserved better luck. Tlie star item of the day was the junior final between Ashburton Old Girls and Albur.v, which ran into eight spells, the players being utterly exhausted long before the end. At the conclusion of tlie games, the president of the Association, Mr Len Bennington, after complimenting the winners, presented them with gold and silver brooches. Results were as follows: SENIOR. ■Winchester li, beat Geraldine 1. Ashburton Old Girls i, beat Stafford 0. Celtic, a bye. Winchester 1, beat Celtic 0. Ashburton Old Girls, a bye. Final. Ashburton Old Girls 2, beat Winchester 0. A very fast open game. Ashburton showed too much speed and combination for Winchester. Miss B. Millichamp (Ashburton) made several fine runs, scoring a goal in each spoil.
JUNIOR. Albury i, beat Geraldine 0. Fairlie High School A 1, beat Winchester 0. Aorangi beat Temnka, by default. Ashburton Old Girls 1, beat Fairlie High School B 0. Albury 1, beat Aorangi 0. Ashburton Old Girls 1, beat Fairlie High School A 0. Final. Ashburton Old Girls 1, heat Albury 0. Although not a first-class exhibition of hockey, this game was very exciting, eight spells having to be played. Ashburton had the better combination, but were held up time and again by Albury’s hack (Miss Wilson), who played brilliantly right through. .Eventually, alter repeated attempts, Miss Forsyth (Ashburton) managed to score the winning; goal amidst great excitement.
