BRITISH POLICY IN CHINA.

No Intention To Change.

CONCRETE RESULTS ANTICIPATED.

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney '' Sun Service. (Received October G, 7.30 p.m.)

LONDON, October's

The British Government does not at present intend to change policy owing to the changed situation in China. It is felt in official circles that tho policy of patience has been a success, and remains the only policy capable of producing concrete results. For example, the Government is satisfied that the Reds have been exterminated, at least momentarily. The policy of taking military protective measures, purely on defensive lines, rebounded to Britain’s credit, also the antiforeign feeling is no longer aimed specially at Britain. The Government will not attempt to restore the Nationals at Hankow, but it is believed nothing would be gained thereby. It is considered preferable to allow the Chinese to establish their own control.

PANIC IN PEKIN. NEAR APPROACH OF INVADER. By Cable-—Press Association—Copyright, Australian And N.Z. Cable Association. SHANGHAI, October 5. Advices from Pekin declare that the capital is panic-stricken as a result oi the reverses suffered by the Fengtisn forces at the hands of the Shansi army, under General Yen-shi-shan, who recently declared for the Nationalists. Tho enemy is advancing without resistance. There has been little actual fighting yet. 'The Northerners were taken by surprise by the Shansis’ action, but propose to make a stand at Huali, on the Pekin-Hankow railway, 120 miles from Pekin. The Shansi developments are responsible for the halting of General Sun-Chuan-Fang’s programme in the lower Yangtsze region. Geueral Sun-Ohuan.-Fang is now concentrating on the task of holding back the Mankinites from advancing to join in the attack on Pekin. fEg.unim.ji rap—t
