RIFLE CLUB CARNIVAL.

A GREAT SUCCESS. .’l- !'•% ANOTHER BIG CROWD. T ■ ■o pMany carnivals have been held in TiVnaru in recent years for deserving otnects ; but 'seldom lias public erithusxasm been so pronounced as it has been during the past few nights of the mpnster carnival, promoted by the Ti- , marxi Defence Rifle Club, together with. ' Rugby and tennis enthusiasts. ~,' Nsver before has John Mill and Co.’s spacious wool store looked so brilliant ~, as it did last night. Bathed in a "briftiance of coloured lights, which created a very pretty effect, it was realised as soon as the popular rendezvous was entered,, that carnival was truly about. The committee have carefully, avoided the idea of making the larpival totally money making, and while not forgetting their objective, they were commended for the amuse ment which they put before the public., - The tug-of-war section, is worth the .’ price of admission alone, while delight.'■ful music throughout the evening was . provided by a special orchestra, The Various side shows and games, many of which are new to' Timaru, are the chief sources of revenue. The games were kept going at top speed last evening, light from the commencement, to the -conclusion. The arrangements are all , of the best, and provided the public remain as keen as they have been, there »is no reason why the Defence Rifle Club

should not have their new range, and the . other sports bodies associated - ‘-should make a considerable sum. ■’Led by the Timaru Main School Drum • l and, Fife Band, under the baton of Mr ’A.F. Boys, a procession left the Hydro - corner at 7.30 p.m. The procession t, had both its humorous and trade sides, , i and many of the exhibitions were of a , sti-iking nature. The route taken was ~'through Stafford Street and round the .i‘ crossing into the carnival. The first , / prize was awarded to Mr G. B. Lamhbbrn for his humorous characterisation . of “P. C. McHungry.”-y.‘.-Much interest was taken in the prize ~rt for the 1000th person ~ to enter the ;; ; carnival. Miss P. Russell, the Vicar- ■ I age, Timaru, purchased ■ the lucky .ticket, and is now the possessor of a . branu new "Arrow” cycle. Another such cycle is to-be awarded to the 2000th purchaser of a ticket. 'i' The tug-of-war contests were some of the most interesting of the carnival, each bout being fought in a very keen spirit. The crowd became highly enthusiastic as oach pull progressed, ana . '* the respective winners were given a * ■ groat ovation. To the officials running •■■■? the tfiurnament must be given every credit for the expeditious and smooth way.the contests are being conducted, •- ihf .tfils section V ; of the "carnival, to- : * night’s pulls promise to be well up to standard. One of the outstanding features of v , the trade exhibits, and of the carnival generally, is the splendid exploitation - of the new local industry,. the Red Diamond products. The neat and clean looking stall, . « situated as it is right .near the main . entrance, is' the first; bbject to'' ari-est, j-v attention, and one cannot possibly pass ■' by without expressing admiration of > tiie excellent display presented, r The stall contains all classes of Red ■--- Diamond products—Oat Flakies, Oatmeal, VVheatmeal, Wholemeal, Semo]ina and tbe New Zealand famed Silverdxist flour. _ It is of special interest to all New " Zealanders, and Timaruvians in particular, that every exhibit produced on the TT' jtall is New Zealand made, with the minor, exception of the calico that comprises the bags. The products con-i-b tained in tbe cartons and bags are ;~L essentially local, an cl...the whole is a distinct credit to • Timaru enterprise, v/r Many hunrders have admired the stall. and nothing but favourable, powment is rib heard on all sides. It certainly is a r~- credit to those responsible, and the propressive Timaru Milline Co., nr© to be congratulated on their initiative. The same company played a very proi. minent part in the procession which left : v‘ the Hydro at 7,30, featuring ,as ; they ir-.r did, their products to fine advantage. : Their display was most original, nine F - members of the staff being.-attired in. ' costumes depicting the various food products of the company, their get-up lending an original and picturesque air r- to the demonstration. One young lady ”'"V was outstanding in a uniciue costume composed of cartons. She bravely carried the weight of her dress and , hat (201 b) throughout tbe evening. - Many congratulatory references wero heard.
