A LAV AYS UNANI AIOUS.

(Special to “Herald.”) ' WKLLINGTON, Sept. 15. An attack was made on the Labour Party in the House to-night, by Air W. S. Glenn (Kangitikei), m regard to statements said to have been made by the member for Alanukau (,»VLr V. J. Jordan). Speaking on the third reading of tlie Summer 'lime Bill, Air Glenn said Air Jordan had cast a reflection on small, hard-working larmer.s. '“Tonight,” lie said, “the member for Alanukau is away speaking on a public platform and organising an election at Raglan, hut lie knew that l was going to give it to linn. Five members of this House took a note ol what lie said, and I've got it here in black and white. I would he vein- sorry to misquote the lion, gentleman.” (Laughter). . ■ - . ■ Air Glenn proceeded to quote Horn the report lie had referred to, said to .have, been t.jAii,ej}~Alo)vn. v by. Jive .members. ... Labour members immediately ,j»roteF.idd''tliat;Wfe;f l ei)oi't was not-correct, find asked yvho,, had taken note of the lvm'arks. v Air Glenn: “The member for_ Taurtan'gjf and',the member, for . Waikato took it down.” ' Air Eraser: “Do they write shorthand.” Ah- Glenn: “Oh, it's not- necessary to write shorthand to take down a few words. Wluit 1 want to know is this, will the Leader of the Opposition support what Air Jordan .said, or will he repudiate it?” Air Holland: “Will the leader of your party stand for everything that you suyr” Air Glenn: “I don’t have to ask my party what 1 say. J. am a party unto myself. (Laughter). All my resolutions are passed .unanimously.' (Renewed laughter.) I know this, that when the farmers of New Zealand hear what the member for Alanukau has said tile Labour Party will not get one vote from the farming community. They won’t have a ‘dog’s chance.’ ” Air Eraser: “1 have spoken!” At this stago, the speaker rang the bell to indicate that Mr Glenn had but five minutes left in which to speak. Air Eraser was at once on his feet to move for an extension of time. There was a chorus' of approval, and Air Glenn was about to thank the House for the concession when Air Speaker informed him that the extension was not granted, one member (Air J. S. Dickson) having declined to assent. '

Mr Glenn was somewhat taken back, but he had the sympathy of Air Fraser. “That’s a rotten thing to do.” commented the member for (Wellington Central. Air Glenn proceeded ,to attack the Labour Party. He dwelt on the effect that Mr Jordan’s statement was likely to have on the farmers of the. Dominion. “They will know what to do m the future.” concluded Air G'eun. “They are. not going to. stand still and take this thing lying down.” (Laugh--1 er.) Air H. T. Armstrong declared with emphasis that the alleged statement of the member for Alanukau was a concoction and totally misrepresented what Air Jordan had said. “The remarks that have been, made to-night would never have been made if there had not been a by-election in progress at Raglan,” he declared. “It’s a move to damage the prospects of tho Labour candidate at Raglan.” A Reform member: “Ho hasn’t a. chance anyway.” Air Armstrong:. “He has a better chanee than many of tlio Reform members will have at next election.” Air Armstrong went on to say that Air Jordan-had on no occasion discredited the farmers of the Doininon, hut he had attacked-the “-miserable specimens” who arc representing the farmers in the House. The Speaker: “Order, order. The Hon. member must withdraw that statement.” Air Armstrong: “Very well, Air Speaker, I will withdraw. But I want to say this, that there are members in this House who are incapable of talking alioub-'anything else but eowyards and piggeries.” Mr A. Al. Samuel said he thou eh t the statement..uncalled for, unwarranted, and foolish: I persist,” h,> "aid. “timt the Labour Party will not go to the farmers at next election and say they have their welfare absolutely at heart.”
