The Mackenzie Sub-Union competitions were advanced a further stage on Saturday, in ideal weather. The game Aorangi v. Fairlie was played on the Show Grounds beiore one of the largest crowds that lias witnessed a club game in Fairlie. The match, which resulted in a draw, was of a very exciting nature. Each club fielded its strongest team, and they were very evenly matched. Some good passing rushes were witnessed, at times, but forward play was the rule. At Tengawui, the home team defeated Albuv./ by 15 points to nil. Mr J. Corbett controlled the game. AORANGI v. FAIRLIE. Aorangi won the toss and pla3’ed on the down grade, with the sun at their backs. Giddings and Forrester took play to the Blue line from the kick-off, a free kick giving relief. Fairlie attacked strongly, Mackenzie Leii ug prominent, till Grant relieved. Fairlie were awarded a free kick in a handy position, and Giddings had a shot but missed the uprights, and the Blues forced. Grant and Miles led the Blue forwards in a good rush to half-way, where P. Black saved well. A further rush by Aorangi was well stopped by F. Black. Fairlie forwards, headed by AV. Black and O’Neill, went right to the line, but J. Cameron stemmed the rush and lined at the 25. The Blue forwards, with Grant, Southgate, and MeNarry in the lead, took play to half-wav. Forrester secured and lined back to the 25. Good passing between A. Cameron, Thomson, and Grant again put Aorangi on attack. Giddings and Black returned to neutral ground. L. Mackenzie, . with a nice kick, further improved Fairlie’s position. Loonies secured and put in a good run. , but was well stopped by F. Black, and Stevenson and O’Neill cleared. Robinson and Keenan broke through the Aorangi defence and looked like scoring, but a. timely “spec’’ by J. Cameron saved. From a line-out, D. Macdonald got away, and witli a dribbling rush took the ball over the line, but Cameron forced just in time. Dale gained ground by a good run and kick, and further passing between Dale, Trotter, and Thomson was stopped by a good tackle by F. Black right, on the lino. Forrester saved from the Blue forwards, with a good kick to the 25. A fast rush by Robinson, Giddings, and Lamont bau Aorangi in difficulties, but Trotter saved by a force. From a scrum Mackenzie smartly worked the blind side, but a tackle by Grant held him up. Off-side by a Blue forward gave Forrester a chance, but the kick fell short, and a force resulted. Aorangi attacked strongly from the drop-out, and went to Fairlie’s 25, where F. Black saved in good style from three Aorangi forwards. AV. Black and Stevenson shifted play back to neutral ground. S. Mackenzie secured smartly from a scrum, and sent on-to L. Mackenzie, who lined in the Blue 25. Further passing between the Red hacks ended in Mackintosh being well tackled, and Aorangi broke away only to be sent back by F. Black. Good work by Forrester and Stevenson left Fairlie in a strong attacking position when half-time was called, with r.o score being registered. Forrester fielded the kick-off and lined at the Blue 25. Trotter gained possession, and with a strong run tc ok play to half-way. Southgate and Collings headed a determined rush to Fairlie’s line, but were held up by Mackenzie. Dale secured and found touch with a nice kick. Trotter put in a great run to Fairlie’s line, where tight forward play ensued. Robinson by a fine solo effort, cleared to halfway. Fairlie were penalised, but F. Black fielded the kick well, this return was taken by Trotter, and Aorangi attacked strongly. S. Mackenzie went down to a solid rush in good style and saved. Trotter, Cameron, and Grant returned, the last-named made a great effort, and got over the line, but was tackled and a five vards’ scrum was ordered, and L. Mackenzie cleared. A oi’angi were attacking strongly at | this stage. ' ,T. O’Neill eventually cleared. Robertson and Grant got a wav, but P. Black "averl. Grant and MeNarry again led the Blue forwards in a good rush, Forrester saving. Mackintosh by fast work carried on to. half-way. ’MeNarry and Bucklev were next prominent in a loose rush, but hnrd-kicking-allowed P. Black to mark and line at the 25. A good rising rush by Aorangi backs was .well

checked by Keenan, who, with L. Mackenzie, returned play to half-way. Forrester secured and lined -at the corner flag. Fairlie now attacked strongly, both forwards and hacks making efforts to score. Passing tween Mackenzie brothers and Forrester elided in the last-named being pushed out in the corner. Buckley cleared from the line-out. Mackenzie and Forrester got away, and the latter was well tackled by Trotter just near the line. Fairlie pressed hard, a free giving respite to Aorangi. A further free kick was landed out at half-way by Grant. Trotter put in a great run. with three men in attendance, and a score looked certain, but F. Black brought off a great tackle and effected a magnificent save. Aorangi kept up the attack, in which Trotter was prominent, but tlie defence proved sound. Fairlie forwards in a sweeping rush went the whole length of the held, but Loonies saved, and Aorangi retaliated in a like manner, F. Black again saving. L. Mackenzie got through but was stopped by Cameron. Grant, Southgate, and Collings led the Aorangi forwards in a rush which penetrated the Fairlie defence, and with only the full-back to pass a try seemed certain, but F. Black dived in and saved brilliantly, and found touch at the 25. Ti'/’e was called shortly .-1 torwards, no score being registered on either side. Air S. H. Sullivan controlled the game.
