THE GAMING BILL.
OPPOSED BY PRESBYTERY. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, July 5. “The Presbytery reiterates its strong opposition to gambling in. all forms, and voices its protest ag.ainst Sir George Hunter’s Gaming Bill now before Parliament, the effect of which, if passed into law, would he to facilitate betting by means of the totalisator throughout the Dominion.” The foregoing motion was carried by the Dunedin Presbytery at its meeting to-day. The mover was the Rev. Dr. Herrington. \ “I hope the Presbytery will voice its protests despite the optimistic statement that it will be carried through the House of Parliament,” said Dr. Merrington. Thirty-two rage meetings were to be held in New Zealand from now to October, and if the Bill was not opposed gambling would grow to such an extent as was ■impossible at present. The Rev. J. D. Smith said the more activity by the Church, the greater would he the influence on members of Parliament. The Presbytery should urge its congregations to.pass similar motions.
