Official statistics show that France’s pre-war population is gradually being restored. It was 40,745,000 last year, compared with 39,200,000 ill 1920, and 41,470.000 in 1913. There has been a slight and steady increase every year since the war. Contrary to popular belief, the French birthrate has not strikingly declined. It was ISS per. 10,000 in 1926, compared with 192 in 1913. The infant death rate is still comparatively high, though in. twenty departments it was below 1925.
