SPORTING.

S.C.J.C. MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY. The weather for the concluding day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was all that could be desired, a typical South Canterbury late autumn day furnishing a striking contrast to the unpleasant conditions which ruled on Friday. "The track was in excellent order, and the fields were good throughout. The chief item on the card, the Autumn Ha dicap, went to the Southlander Baldowa, who had occupied third place in the Timaru Cup. The apparent improvement in form shown by the winner was in great measure explained by more judicious handling. In the Cup Baldowa was very wide out at the home turn, whereas in Saturday’s race he never left the rails. The steeplechase made amends for the fiasco of the first day, Blue Hall scoring after a good contest. The attendance was considerably larger than on Friday, but continued bad weather in North Canterbury again restricted the number of visitors from that quartet-. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £13,848, a decrease of £I3OO on the sum handled on the corresponding day last, autumn. The aggregate for the meeting was £23,011, compared with £30,172 put through a year ago. The management did not in any particular, fall below the customary high standard, and it was unfortunate that unfavourable weather caused a monetary loss on the meeting. With the first day winner, Kaikahu, out of the way, form seemed to point to Bonatic in the hurdle race, but in a good betting race Dubious and Orifiamb were both preferred to him, and Jovial and Coastguard also were well backed. Goldtown and Jovial led over the first fence, and at the obstacle in front of the stand this pair were attended by Bonatic, Red Heather and Orifiamb. At the seven furlongs the leaders were Goldtown, Bonatic, Dubious and Red Heather, a faulty jump knocking Jovial back to fifth. Coastguard crashed at the hurdle near the five furlong barrier, where Goldtown, Dubious and Red Heather were carrying on from Orifiamb and Bonatic. Racing to the last hurdle Dubious and Goldtown were a shade in front of Red Heather, Orifiamb and Bonatic. Dubious looked a winner a furlong from home, but was outstayed by Bonatic, who won by nearly two lengths from Goldtown, who also defeated the topweight by a head. Oriflamb was fourth, a couple of lengths further back.

Card Trick and Money Peer dominated the betting on the April Stakes. Ark Royal being a long way back in the figures. Court Jester and Princess Mafalda were quickest to begin, but at the end of two furlongs Card Trick had joined Gourt Jester, and Princess Mafalda had dropped back into the ruck. Running round the top bend Card Trick and Court Jester had opened up a gap of six lengths from Money Peer, and they led into the straight well clear of Princess Mafalda and Money Peer. Court Jester, Card Trick and Princess Mafalda were hard at it a furlong from home and looked like filling the places'. Court Jester, when vigorously ridden, disposed of the other pair, but was collared on the post by Ark Royal, who finished fast wide out and snatched victory by a head. Princess Mafalda was a neck behind Court Jester, with Card Trick and Money Peer close up. Ark Royal looked a promising two-year-old in the spring, but has been troubled by soreness. Court Jester is an Austra-lian-bred youngster, and with a bit of luck would have won. Ark Royal unished too far out for Court Jester’s ider to see him. Princess Mafalda finished well after losing her place by some means in the early tages. An inquiry was held into Ark loyal’s running on the previous day, >ut the explanation of his rider that he horse had been interfered with it the post on Friday was accepted. Hie reason, probably, was an equitible one. as Ark Royal, who was obviously sore, was not in the picture m Saturday at five furlongs, the distance over which he failed on the opening day. If there was any suspicious feature, it was that ‘.Ark Royal carried 10G tickets on the first day and 343 on Saturday. Rob promised to be a pronounced favourite for the Smithfield Handicap, but a late run on Carnot and good support for Receipt lengthened the Solferino gelding’s price. Nine of Spades led off from Rob and Lava, and at the end of a furlong the order was Nine of Spades, Lava, Sweet Melody, Rob and Receipt. Lava had her head in front at the bend from Nine of Spades, Sweet Melody, Rob and Receipt. Once the straight was reached Rob and Sweet Melody displaced the leaders, and in a good finish Rob defeated Receipt by a neck, with Serotina, who came with a brilliant run, only a head away. Volant was a length further back. Rob appeared to win with a shade in reserve, but would have been troubled had Serotina appeared earlier on the scene. Both Rob and Volant made big strides in the totalisator figures. On Friday they carried 263 and 113 respect-ivtely; on Saturday the numbers were 799 and 652.

who had started in the preceding race, was the only withdrawal from the Autumn Handicap, leaving nine to face the starter. Set Sail, who was kept rugged right up till starting time, was a decided favourite, being entrusted with twice as much money as any other runner, but there was little Booster, Baldowa, Ophir, The Harp and Bilbo. Ophir and Courtly Rose were troublesome at the post, and Courtly Rose eventually was left. Booster, Bilbo and Set Sail were first to find their feet, but when the field had settled down Booster was showing the way to Mountain Lion, Bilbo and The Harp. At the six furlongs Booster and Mountain Lion-were together, attended bv Bilbo, The Harp, Set Sail and Baldowa. At the bend Fresco t joined Booster and Mountain Lion. The Lion retired once heads were turned for home, and Baldowa moved up on the rails. Heading Booster inside the last furlong, Baldowa beat Booster decisively by three lengths, with The Plarp a length away, a head in front of Ophir and Fresco, who were practically on terms. Baldowa showed considerable improvement on his first day’s running, but was ridden with better judgment, this time covering less ground than anything in the race. Set Sail was not prominent, but was not in condition to do herself justice.

Lucy Locket was the prime selection for the Temuka Hack Handicap, the others in good demand being Spode, Moratorium, Solzia, Gay Sonnet and Peho. Moratorium was not up with the field when the button was pressed and lost four or five lengths. Lucy Locket and Royal Tractor made play from Spode, and after going a furlong Royal Tractor, Lucy Locket, Dark Spot and Spode comprised the leading division. At this stage Moratorium was a long last with Peho tailing the main bunch. Royal Tractor and Lucy Locket were in charge at the top of the straight, with Solzia also going well, but Peho flashed up on the out-

side and a hundred yards from home she had Lucy Locket beaten. Moratorium also finished well, but was a length behind Peho at the winning post. Lucy Locket was a neck away, half a length in front of Master John. Peho had gone up a stone as a reward for her first day win, and covered a lot of ground, but still won in attractive fashion.

The field in the steeplechase was reinforced .by the addition of King Abbey, Blue Hall and Muzzle, making seven to face the music. Adjutor commanded most support, about 150 chances above Nightraid. Blue Hall, King Abbey and Muzzle were first to move, but Muzzle came to grief at the first obstacle. King Abbey soon took up his accustomed role of pacemaker, and at the stand double (7 furlongs after the start), he was showing the way to Blue Hall, Frisco Mail, Palencia, Adjutor and Nightraid. Seven furlongs from home the order was Blue Hall, King Abbey, Palencia, Frisco Mail, Adjutor, with Nightraid some lengths further back. With half a mile to go King Abbey was stopping, and at the top Blue Hall was three lengths clear of Frisco Mail and Adjutor. Blue Hall was first over the final obstacle, and holding his own on the flat he won by three lengths from Frisco Mail, who beat Adjutor by a length. Nightraid was ten lengths further back, and Palencia and King Abbey also completed the course. Palencia, however, was very lame in front, and is not likely to be seen out for some time. The race was a great improvement on the first day’s fiasco. Frisco Mail, handled with good judgment, fenced much more kindly than on Friday, and showed a profit to backers who had the hardihood to support him. The mile hack race drew nine starters, of which Brightling and Happy Queen carried the bulk of the money. Flaming Ray and Real Glad led off at the head of a bunch, the last to get going being Brightling and Green Cloth. The last-named soon got into her stride, and at the end of two furlongs had run into third place behind Flaming Ray and Ascetic, the others well placed being Real Glad, Shandre and Happy Queen. Green Cloth and Flaming Ray led round the home turn from Real Glad. Shandre and Happy Queen, with Brightling also handy. Once in the straight Happy Queen made her run, and although she steered a bad course, the Ashburton (illy won by a couple of lengths from Eyed Ova, who beat the faster-finish-ing Beaming by half a length. Shandre was fourth, another length away. Happy Queen was a winner on the first day also, but her increase of lllbs was reduced on Saturday by the 51bs apprentice allowance. Beaming finished very fast. The biggest field of the meeting paraded for the concluding event, the Seadown Handicap, Brightling being the only defection from the sixteen acceptors. The topweight, Overhaul, was made No. 1 in order of favouritism also, but there was solid backing for Eaton Bells and Thorndale, and considerable support for Mime. Although Courtly Rose and two or three others threatened to give trouble at the barrier, the lot were despatched in an excellent line. Favoured by inside positions, Tliolomon, Fairy Herald and Moratorium gained the initial advantage, but before going far Mime and Eaton Bells joined them. Passing the five furlong peg Eaton Bells, Mime and Moratorium were setting the pace to Thorndale and a big bunch. Courtly Rose, who had started from the extreme outside, was on terms with Eaton Bells and Mime as they raced along the top, Thorndale and Fairy Herald still being handy. Half way down the straight Thorndale looked as if he might collar Eaton Bells and Mime, but he failed to come on, and Eaton Bells secured the verdict by a neck from Mime, with Fairy Herald a short length away. A neck further back came Bilbo, Thorndale and two or three more practically in line. Details: —■ PUKAKI HURDLES, of 140 sovs; 1J miles. 3 —E. and N.
