Israel Melcher (54) was charged at the Old Bai-'ey with attempting to blackmail Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer and prospective Conservative candidate in Wednesday’s byelection. The evidence showed that Rubin’s father acquired a fortune from the West Australian pearl trade and sent Melcher to Shark’s Bay buying pearls. Melcher said be lived a lonely seven years, and then his health broke down. The prosecution alleged that Melcher threatened to disc'ose that Rubin, was paying secret commissions, and thus ruin Rubin’s political career. It was also alleged that Melcher retained papers appertaining to Rubin's business. Rubin denied all the allegations. The case was adjourned.
