SPORTING.

S.C.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING.

\ OPENED IN STORMY WEATHER.

Tho moisture fcr which South Canterbury’s pastimes had been athirst tor weeks arrived at an inopportune time for the South Canterbury Jockey Club, whoso autumn meeting commenced on the Washdyke course yesterday. Not a great amount of rain fell, but sleety showers were accompanied by a keen southerly, wind, and the attendance of racegoers from Timaru and adjacent districts was below tho average. In addition, tho climatic conditions north and south were infinitely worse, and the number of visitors was comparatively small. The track did net suffer to any appreciable extent, but the results of the inclement weather on totalisator business were pronounced, the turnover for the day, £9lGd. showing a very big decrease on the sum of £15013 pooled on the corresponding day last year. Apart Iroin the steeplechase, fields were of good size throughout the dav, and the sport was. of an entertaining nature. The Steeplechase was a fiaseo in more ways than one. Of the five starters, two ran off at tho first obstacle, and a third baulked and lost his rider at the end of seven furlongs. Tho two survivors made what in the circumstances was a good finish. The Cup resulted in a meritorious win for Assurance, after a. keen struggle with tho two Pouthlnndcrs. Rilbo and Raldowa. Assurance for a time failed to reproduce his track work in races, and did not win until ho returned a big dividend at Wasl’dvko in a haclc race in ihe spring. Rinflo then his form has been remnrkngly consistent, his pet courses apparentlv being Trentham and Washdvke. Wingatui horses filled the. places in the Pmithfield TTniidiean. which provided an exhilarntine finish. There was an inquirv after the Rosewill Dark Handicap. in which Waterlow stonped very quickly when beaded bv Pelio soon after reaching the straight. As a result the rider. D. Hall, had bis license suspended for six months for not riding bis hot=o out. and tlm owner. E. R. Pierce, was disqualified for a year for giving unsatisfactory ovidontr concerning bis betting. The Tekapo Hurdles. Him in t dilatory event. was marked by the evenness of the support, accorded to tho horses at the top of the handicap— Dubious, Oriflamh, Ivaikalm, and Coastguard. Onldtown took ohJirge at tho start, but was soon joined bv Ronatie and Dubious, this trio lendino* past the stand, where Coastguard fell. At tho seven furlong post Pmnatic was several lengths clear of Goldtown and Dubious, but n furlong further on Dubious im'nod Ronatie in the. lend. Then TCaika.hu moved un. and half a mile from home he was in front, with Dubious handv, while after a gap rani" O’-ifinmh and Goldtown, with Last Thought tailed right off. TCaikahu was just clear of Dubious and Oriflamh at the entrance to the straight, with Ronatie not far awav. Dubious headed Knikaliu momentarily after crossing, the last fence, and Ronatie also finished strongly, but TCaikahu hshl bis place and beat Ronatie by two lengths. Dubious was a length away third, with Oriflamh three lengths furf’or hack. ICadcahu won handsomely. He is very well at present., and further success may come his wav during the winter. Ronatie was finishing on well. lmt Dubious was stopping a bit at the end. Or : finmb ran disappointingly, and possibly has been t ovor-rated. Tn n field of eight for the Cladstono htaek Handicap. the loralU-trainod Pbandre was a little hotter Ur-kcd thn” h.-reon Cloth, with Rrightling and Hapnv Oneen also in geod demand. R pad Glad was smartest out. with Hnnov Queen, Green Cloth and Chandra bandy, while Ascetic and Princess Mafnlda were last. Ascetic soon moved up. aud after going about two furInnrrc be was in front. Then Pri'uws.s Mafnlda rushed through, and half a mile from home she was Rhcpvin" tlm way well dear of Aseptic and TTnnpv fiiuoen. while a little further on Rrightling and Rpam'ng were also handv. Princess Mafalda retired at the entrance to the straight. Happy Queen was then left ’u charge, and she went on to win easily bv three lengths from Rri"htling. Three lengths further back came Real Glad. with Green Cloth, plmndre and Reaming only he°ds away. The win of Hanpy Queen, tho first dm had received, '••w wo’l earned and this sister of Uadv Gav and Raeheler Gav sTiepdd do better vet. Rhandre disappointed Us connections, and his form was too bad to be correct RrUhtlirg finished well after being well in +hp ruck in the enrlv stages. Thirteen horses wpUhed out for the ■pie'-d-ie Stakes. Sax Airini. a two-year-old fillv. grit awav when doing her preliminary. crashing through the fence and finishing un on the road with b°r shoulder cut. She was allowed to 1m withdrawn. Solgele was a pronounced favourite, carrying nearly twwe a Q ; much money as Gav Sonnet, with All j Colours a good third fanev. All Colours ; was soon ioiued in tlm lead by Solgele j with Ca-d Trick, Gar Sonnet aM | Master John in attendance. At the |

end of two furlongs All Colours dropped back, Solgele going on from Card Trick and Gay Sonnet. They raced like this to the straight, where Gay Sonnet took second place, and Royal Tractor made a forward move. Solgele was beaten as soon as heads were turned few home, Gay Sonnet being left well clear of Card Trick. Then Royal Tractor put in a good run, and the St. Andrews-owned but Riccarton-traincd gelding got up ’in the last stride to beat Gay Sonnet by a bead. Card Tric-k was three lengths awav, half a length in front of Solgele. The winner I is a speedy customer, but dees not seem j likely to stay. Gay Sonnet is another j who may never bo more than a

I sprinter. Solgele lias always found five furlongs far enough, and under the circumstances rather much use was made of him. Tlie scratching of Rapier and Set Sail left eight starters fcr the 'Timaru Cup. Raldowa carried i\_lew pounds more I him Bilbo, with Opliir a good i third selection. Thblomon and Fresco j Jed Opliir out of the straight, where Ophir took second place, with Gay 1 Queen ami Rilbo handy. At the five j furlong post Ophir took charge from j Tholdiuon and Bilbo, with Gay Queen i and Fresco next. 'Then Tholomcai ! dropped out, and a furlong further on ; had Bilbo, Gay Queen, Fresco and As- ! surancc following in that order. Rilbo ! ranged alongside Ophir at the home turn, with Assurance and Fresco not ! far away, while Raldowa was moving up on the outside. A furlong from the. post Rilbo had a slight advantage over Assurance, with Raldowa handy. In a gord finish Assurance beat Rilbo by a j bead, Raldowa being two lengths away, 1 with Ophir three lengths further hack, I and Fresco next. Assurance has. made wonderful improvement during the last i few months. and he is now a solid | customer who should do still better ■ next season. He lost a good many 1 lengths when, with Mountain Lion, he ! made a bad turn out of the straight, i Rilbo hacked his Southland form with ' a useful effort. Raldowa ran a good i race, but covered a lot of ground at : the turn. i Twelve contested .the chief sprint i event, the Sinithfield Handicap. Receipt ! was a hot favourite, carrying more than 1 twice as much money as Eaton Bells, 1 who was a little better backed than Rob. The first to show were Dancing Days and Lava, with Receipt next. . Eaton Rolls soon joined them. Hardy Gurdy heading the others. There was no change until they reached the home ' turn, where Serotina moved up, and ! Volant and Overhaul also made their ! appearance. "When fairly in a lino for the post Dancing Days retired, and | a furlong from the post, Eaton Bells : was just showing the way to Volant, ' ! with Receipt and Rob almost on terms, 1 and Overhaul putting in a strong run !on the outside Receipt gradually wore ' Eaton Bells down, and just lasted long I enough to win by a head from Overi haul, who finished very fast a head |in front of Eaton Bells. A neck away ] came Volant, who beat Rob by a head. 1 The winner has been running very : consistently this season, and Ricearton i form pointed to her having a great 1 chance. She was a trifle lucky, howj ever, that Overhaul’s run was delayed Iso long. Receipt pulled her backers ! through, but she would not have been iin such warm demand had it been ! generally known that she had done no 1 j work since the Easter meeting, and j was only _got to the post by the liberal ! use of fomentations on her hocks, j The five acceptors turned out for ! the Otiptia Steeplechase, Frisco Mail | going a good favourite. 'The race was ; a poor affair. Palencia was in front j when he ran off at tho first fence, | Frisco Mail following ITiijrg. Adjutor : then wont on from Nightraid, with i Glument a few lengths away. They I raced in this order for six furlongs, ! with Glument gradually losing ground, i Glument baulked and lost his rider | after going seven furlongs. The two ; leaders were together at the homo turn, i and they jumped tho last fence on i terms. Adjutor then drew out and beat ! Nightraid by four lengths. Friscor ! Mail was taken back and eventually i got round, being seven furlongs away j when the leading pair finished. His ! exhibition of jumping was not good, i but Humphries received a round of | applause for his pluc-k and persever- , ance. Adjutor was making his first'' j appearance over country, and ho looks | likoi being a good steeplechaser with

j more experience, | The of Brightling, Spode, Eyed Ova, Luthy and Princess Mafahhv left a field of nine for tlnr Jlosewill | Hack Handicap. Lucy Locket *-as a i little hotter backed than Moratorium, ; with Seizin. and Pcho alsci well sup- ! ported. Watorlow was smartest out, with Soltia and Flaming Pay almost on terms, b/it after going a furlong Hoylake joined ’\Vaterlow_g^,foaming Par in the Jorui. Dark Spot being last, with Pehc just in front of him. A little further on Royal Head moved up, and racing round the turn he was in close ! attendance on Watorlow, with Flaming Pay and Hoylake handy, while Peho and Moratorium were improving their positions. Watorlow led into the straight, but Peho then shot out, and won easily by four lengths from /Moratorium, who beat Solzia by two ' lengths, while half a length aivav came j Flaming Pay, a head in'front of Dark ! Spot, who finished fast. Peho’s per- | formance was very attractive, after her j slow start, while .Dark Spot also drew attention to his chance the first time he begins well. Lucky Locket was imI lucky at the start, and was never , iii'-ther up than sixth. I Nine of Spades and Mime were witlij drawn front „the Doncaster Handicap, j leaving eight runners. Thorndale was ! installed a strong favourite, with Fairy j Homld and The Harp slightly better ! backed than the next lot. Courtly j Poso gave trouble at the start, and I eventually absolutely refused to jump j off. y.avb>ton and Sweet Melodv were, | smartest to begin, hut at the end of a 1 urlon"- Sweet. Melodv had taken clum-e from Fairy Herald and Tarleton, with Hie Harp and Thorndale next,. Then | Jolly Glad moved up, and she was with

Gin front lot at the homo turn. Suwfc Melodv retired at the entrance to the. straight, leaving Fairy Herald and 1 lie Harp in charge, with Thorndale, Jnrleton and .Jollv Glad next. The Ilarp had Fairy Herald juyiten. n furlong Hom the post, and Aame on to win by three lengths. Thorndale. despite vigorous handiinv, failed to reach lengths behind Fairy Herald, with Jnrleton two lengths Dirt, her hack. The M«.irp m on in oonvinoinoj style over his favourite distance, and he appears to he back to somethinp: nearer his best form. Fairy Herald ran a sound rare, and should soon he a winner in soft going. Thorndale could not quite go with the leaders in the earlv stao-cs jarJeton put up a lor a horse who has only lately resumed work after a spell.
