The I-lumbug—Courante yearling colt purchased in Sydney by Mr J. Lowe, of Wanganui, for 475 guineas, is a half-brother to the brilliant Valicare, also to Avant Courier, who realised 5500 guineas a year ago. Humbug is the New Zea-land-bred horse (brother to Eulalie), by Absurd, from the Cicero mare Eulogy. Through a mistake on the part of the paving-out staff of the totalisator at the"Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting, about 100 investors in 10s tickets on a winner received twice the amount they were, entitled to (states the Hawera “Star”). The mistake occurred through a clerk on a 10s window believing that he was paying out on the £1 tickets. None of the early recipients of the double dividend reported the mistake-to the totalisator staff, and it was not till 9 9 dividends had been paid out that the clerk’s attention was drawn to this error. The investor who reported the-mistake was a policeman, who did not, like those who had been there before him, allow his joy at receiving the windfall to overcome his scruples. The mistake will cost the club £2OO.
