ROYAL TOUR.

ENTHUSIASM IN BRISBANE. B r C»ble—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cablo Asßoriation. BRISBANE, April 7. While the Duke of York was proceeding to visit the returned sold ers, the police and military lost control of the crowd outside the entrance to tho theatre. Even the plunging police horses were unable to quell the people’s j ardour, the Duke’s car being unI able to proceed. j The Duke sat there for ten minutes j while efforts were made to clear a j path across the footpath but it was of jno avail. Eventually the car made as I though 1o return to Government j House, and proceeded by .a circuitous route to the rear entrance to the hall, I tho Duke being thus enabled to keep i his engagement.

A redeeming feature of the unparalleled episode was that no effort was made to actually mob the car or even mount the running board. Tho police used every device in their power short of batoning the crowd, but were completely powerless.

The crowd was composed largely c f women and girls, many of whom fainted, while others had to receive hospital treatment.

The Duke left the theatre by the back entraneo and made the re him journey without incident.
