WHEAT.
TELEGRAM TO PRIME MINISTER. Yesterday, Air J. Bitchener, M.P., . (President of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union), and Air T. D. Burnett, M.P., for Ternuka, sent the following telegram to the Prime Alinister (Hon, J. G. Coates) i - “Wheat groAvers are extremely anxious that the proposed increase of duty on flour should be ratified by Parliament, and made effective at the end of June, thus giving the necessary protection to groAvers and millers for the remaining seven months ’of this wheat season. That representatives of groAvers, millers, and merchants confer with the Government relative to the establishment of a Avorking scheme for marketing, Avithout increasing the price of flour or bread. We appreciate the fact that Avith the dumping duty the importations of flour will be closely watched by the GoA-ernment; and understand that if necessary, growers Avill be protected till the increased duty can take effect. The Avelfare of the wheat groAving industry is dependent on your protection.” A copy of this telegram was sentto Air E. P. Lee, M.P., for Oamaru, Avith a suggestion that he also should telegraph to the Prime Minister on the subject, on behalf of the wheat groAvers of North Otago.
