His Lordship, Bishop West-Watson, visited Temuka yesterday. Mr A. W. Smith, Grampians Station, Mackenzie Country, is on a visit to Wellington. The Hon. R. A. Wright (Minister! for Education) will pay an official visit to Timaru to-morrow.

Mr J. R. Bruce left Timaru by the second express for the north yesterday.

Mr W. L. Campbell was a passenger by the express for Christchurch yesterday. The Hon. K. S. Williams (Minister of Public Works) and the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Marine) were passengers by the first express for the south yesterday. Mr G. A. Hislop of the RegistrarGeneral’s branch of the Internal Affairs Department, Timaru, has received advice of his transfer to Dunedin on promition, and will leave Timaru at the end of the month.

Mr W. J. Bardsley, secretary to the Dunedin Harbour Board, passed through Timaru yesterday on iiis return t« Dunedin from Wellington. His Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Charles Eergusson) passed through Timaru by the first express yesterday on his way to the Bluff, to farewell the Duke and Duchess of York. The Prime Minister (Hon. J. G. Coates) went south for the same purpose. At yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Governors of the Timaru High Schools the chairman (Mr J. Bitchener, M.P.), welcomed Mr W. D. Campbell back to the Board after his trip to the Homeland, and at the same time expressed the hope that Mr Campbell had benefited considerably the trip. Ivor the Colonial Institute’s essay competition for 1926, there were 73 essay. The subject for the essay in Class A was; —“Discuss the importance of the years 1880-1890 in the history of the British Empire.” Eirst prize, Janie V. It. Cooper, Grammar School for Girls, Watford, Herts. Second prize to be divided between Myrtle Darey, Grammar School for Girls, Watford, Herts, and Alexander Cormack Jessep, Waitaki Boys’ High School, Oamaru. Among those who received honourable mention were ; —Ciass A : Erie Broeldand, Dalmer, Waitaki Bovs’ High School, Oamaru; Kelvin Bransby Hunter, St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch. Class B: David Moore Patterson and James Mttnro Bertram, both of Waitaki Boys’ High School. “We should be proud of South Canterbury’s young men who have climbed to the top of the ladder in their professions,” said Mr J. Bitchener (chairman. of t]ie Board of Governors of the Timaru High Schools) at the monthly meeting of the Board yesterday, in congratulating Mr T. B. Strong in bping elevated to the position of Director of Education for New Zealand. Mr Bitchener said the new Director had received his early training in the Waimate district, and together with btlier South Canterbury men, had risen high in the service of the Department. Mr J. G. Gow endorsed the chairman’s remarks, and hoped that Mr Strong would meet with every success in a difficult position. It was decided that a letter be sent to Mr Strong offering the Board’s congratulations on his appointment.
