BOY IMMIGRANTS.
ALLEGED ILL-TREATMENT. The Hon. W. Noswortliv sent the blowing a letter to the Rev. L. B. Dailey. Auckland, in reference to the lathers allegation, regarding the treatment of a boy immigrant:— “Owing to my absence from Wellington your letter of March 14 lias just reached me. I had already seen vour statement. published in the Press, but preferred to await the receipt of the letter itself before replying. “H is to he regretted that you are still unable to furnish information without which it is impossible for me to nmlm nnv investigations inU the case of the boy your refer to. There is at present no evidence, even that the boy was an assisted immigrant, under any of the Government’s schemes, and it is unfortunate, to say the least of it, that doubt, in perfectly good faith, should have cast a reflection not only on-the admittedly successful policy of the Government, but also of a large number of farmers who are carrying out, faithfully and sympnthetica’lv, their obligat ons to the. bovs in their emp'oymort. The 'Lonrlmonr is fully nlive to is responsibility in this matter, and will always welcome information that mnv toad to the removal of legitimate grievances, or m any way advance the wp'dar® of tlm bovs. but it must be evident that, criticism that is not supported by sufficient detail to enable inquiry to be made, is not only use'ess, but apt to cause mischief. I appreciate your desire to respect the confidence of your informants, but 1 can assure you no information % wni may care to send me in confidence will ho allowed to operate detrimentally to the hoy, where ihere is any substantial around of complaint.”
