(From Our Own Correspondent.), ST. PATRICK’S DANCE. A dance, in aid of the Catholic Church, funds, was held in Aorangi Hall on Thursday night. About 100 couples were present, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The hall was nicely decorated, and the Hoot- was in excellent order. Supper was supplied by an energetic band of ladies. Extras were contributed by Misses Pickering and Sullivan, and Messrs F. Smith, D. Angland and R. Braddick. Messrs Siegar, Geaney and Guinness,y acted as M.C’s. FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITIONS. On Thursday evening, a competition was held by the members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, for a. cup, presented by Superintendent Campbell, of Timaru. The competition consisted of a two-man event, in coupling and running out 200 feet of hose, with two dtliveries. Four teams competed, and the result was as follows: Firemen AV. Pickering and C. Boulter 1. Lieutenant H. Welsh and assistant foreman S. Ryder 2. The event proved very interesting to a number of spectators. Mr \V. Bourn acted as time-keeper. NEW ZEALAND MOTOR SPEED CHAMPIONSHIP.
The following is a report of the South Canterbury representatives (all of Fairlie) at the New Zealand motor championships, held at Auckland this month : In the principal event, the New Zealand Motor Cup, Mr C. W. F. Hamilton's “Isle of Man’’ Sunbeam car suffered ill-luck by breaking an oil pump while leading the field by the considerable margin of approximately half a mile. Prior to the mishap, Mr Hamilton established a record lap, which was 10 miles, from a standing start, and including one turn, averaging approximately S 9 miles per hour. The car, timed at different periods during the race, attained the speed of over 107 miles per hour, which is the greatest speed evei attained in the Southern Hemisphere. At the 1925 Muriwai meeting, at Auckland, Mr Hamilton established an Australasian record, averaging 100.5 m.p.h. for five miles. This record has witfustood sev ir.u attempts, including Australian conipetition, the nearest approach to this record being in the vicinity of 00 ni.p.li. Another Mackenzie representative, Mr M. G. Wills, of “Qpawa,” Alburv, driving ail eight-cylinder T.T. Sunbeam, had the misfortune to break a valve, during practice, the day before the race, and eoiisequom ly ie could not conipct' 3 . Mr A. Irving, of Albury, in his “Jlngatti,” finished second to Mr Hope Bartlett (Australia) in the New Zealand light car cup. This race was the .most exciting of the day, only five seconds Separating the two cans at the finish.
