Air Cartwright nad not only solved the .borough, nut lie had gone out ot lus way to assist other districts, and lie nad never Oeen called upon to assist without having responded generously. Thu past term was' two years of narmony. The .Mayor had always been most courteous to tho Council, amt il' lie erred at all, it was that lie allowed Councillors too much indulgence. On belialt of the deputation, he hoped that -Ur Cartwright would accept nomination, and in me event ol a contest, the deputation would pledge themselves to do their utmost to put Air Cartwright at the top of the poll. Or. Ale [.lines said that be was very plea-eel to see that tile .Deputy-Mayor Headed the deputation, and he (tlm speaker) would not be honest if be cud nut say that if there was anyone who deserved the honour it was the •Deputy-Mayor, who aas a tower of 'Strength in lue Council. (Applause), lie hud been agreeably disappointed wctli the Mayor’s term of office, oeeause being a busy man, and connected with 'important organisations in the town, he (the speaker) had formed the opinion that that Air Cartwright would not have the time to devote to the town affairs, but this was obviously wrong. He imped that Alt; Cartwright would give his consent, and if there was an election he need not have any fear of the result. Cr. J. S. Sinclair endorsed all the .se.itiment.s of the previous speakers. The Alayoress also had done her share ot the work nobly and well. Cr. J. Cook was convinced that if they searched tlm whole of the district, they could not find a more able man to uii the'position. Cr. Evans said that if the other Councillors who were absent ha<!( come along, they would have endorsed all that had been said. 'Tho Council did appreciate what the Alayoress had done, and he hoped that Mr Cartwright’s answer would be a favourable one.

In reply, the Mayor said that one could not help but feel highly honoured to he waited upon by representatives of the Council, and asked to again accept, nomination for Alayor. He had been a ’member of the Council for 16 years, and on the first occasion, much to his surprise, ho had been returned at the top oP the poll. The work in the town was getting more and more important. During his term as) Alayor, lie had nothing but the highest praise for the manner in which ho had been supported by the Councillors. IV- was specvhflly pleased to hear the appreciative remarks about Mrs Cartwright, and he coukl assure those present that he could not have carried on without her help! With the consent of the Alayoress, he would say straight out that lie would accede to their request. (Loud applause). Cr, Evans said that ini the event of a contest, the members of the deputalion would pledge themselves to see that their present Alarm* was returned at the. top of the poll. (Applause).

MRS. T. TILBItOOK. Airs T. Tdbrook, who lias represented Temuka and Geraldine Borougli on the South Canterbury Hospital Board, was waited upon on Thursday eventing by a deputation consisting of Mesdames G. IS. Cartwright, J. Cross, F. Beri, D. Alclnnes, and the Mayor, (Air G. B. Cartwright), Councillors AV. F. Evans, T. Gunnion, A. 11. Fenn, A. W. Buzan, J. B. Sinclair and D. Aid lilies. Tho Alayor apologised for tlie absence of Councillors 1. S. Lee and D. White. There was a strong feeling in the district- that Airs Tdbrook was the right person to represent them. Airs Beri, Councillors Alclnnes, Fenn, Sinclair, Gunnion and Buzan spoke in similar strain. Airs Tilbrook. in reply, said that it would be very hard not to feel touched by the words of appreciation expressed that night. During the past six years the work had grown considerably, and .Hie hud Imped that they would find some one more suited foi) the position, but evidently they desired her to again offer herself for nomination. Councillor Alclnnes said that the levy from the Borough had increased from the time he was Alayor, from £BS to nearly £3OO. This was quite true, but the secretary had informed her a greater sum than that was returned by the Charitable Aid Board, quite apart from the services rendered by the hospital. She could only thank them again for again honouring her, and if they felt that she was wanted for the position, she was willing to otter herself for nomination.
