MADAME ELVJNO. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 18. A versatile lady of middle age well known as “Madame Elvino,” who included among her specialities telepathy, healing, face-reading, and hair specialist, was convicted on two charges of undertaking to tell fortunes. The occult sense of Madame, whose full name was Constance Elvino Patterson, widow, could not detect the calling of two police matrons who visited her house on different occasions. The bench fined her 10s and costs.

MANUFACTURE OP EXPLOSIVE. Br Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, March 16. As a sequel to an explosion which blow up Ins house at Bur wood last January, Edward Arthur Knunett was charged with manufacturing explosives, contrary to the provisions of the Act. He was fined 10s and costs. The police evidence showed that the man bought potassium chlorate and sulphur from a druggist, and mixed them for the purpose of blowing up logs. During the night, a jar exploded and the house was partly demolished.

BREAKING AND ENTERING. By Tcl«graph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 16. Three brothers, Albert Windsor (31), painter, Joseph Windsor (28), labourer and Lawrence Windsor- (25), labourer, ' were charged to-day with having broken and entered Day’s Bay paviliou and having stolen £72 in money, 5000 cigarettes, a quantity of tobacco, cigars and chocolate, and a safe and cashbox as well as other goods, of-a total value of £ll9 9s. Counsel for accused stated that his clients intended to plead guilty. Detective McLennan said he interviewed the three accused at the gaol. They admitted that the three of them were responsible for the burglary, and that the goods discovered were proceeds of it. All three accused, who are serving a sentence of twelve months imprisonment for escaping from custody at Palmerston North, when charged with safe-breaking pleaded guilty, and were, committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
