The commencement of the Australian toimis championship tournament was made the occasion of the- opening of the Victorian Tennis Association’s splendid new ground at lvooyong, in fine weather. There was a big crowd. The early stages of the championship matches produced some splendid struggles between leading players. EXHIBITION GAMES TO-DAY. The Timaru Club courts, Elizabeth j Street, wiil be the mceca of tennis r-n-I tliusiasts this afternoon, the occasion I being the appearance oi the six orach | players from New South IVales. Tue team which consists of Messrs N. and l l '. Peach, J. Ivl’Causland, Dr. A. L. North. J. Fitzgerald and C. Brewster, will arrive by tlie first express from Christchurch, and after lunching at the Grosvenor, will proceed to the courts, where a welcome will be tendered by lit? Mayor, Mr G. J. Wallace, at 1 p.m Flay will commence immediately afterwards, and will consist of exhibition doubles and singles play by the visitors, and with leading local players. The oificinl tour of New Zealand ended at Christchurch last Saturday. Whilst the visitors may not be in tiio same class as Anderson, Patterson and Co., they are high-grado performers. Their play is of tlie stylish and effortless variety, ami should he an education to those privileged to see them. N. Peach and Dr. North are two of thestrongest players of the team, excelling In singles, the latter being the possessor of a lovely forehand drive, and is very good on the overhead stuff. Peach Brothers visited South Canterbury three years ago- with tho previous New South Wales team, but did not plav owing to injuries. Their specialty is doubles play, their smashing being highly spectacular.
