THE DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 21. The Dominion Bowling Championships were resumed this morning in perfect weather. There are only two rinks left in the four-a-side event, and they commenced play shortly after noon. This morning’s results were:— SINGLES. A. Smellie (Green island) beat Maxwell Walker (Auckland), 15-13. Walker was the Dominion champion in 1915, 1919 and 1923. Still left in the singles are:— Two lives: A. C. Mclntyre (Hamilton) ; one life: Smellie, H. Clarke (Rocky Nook) and Norrie Bell (Hamilton). The draw for the next round is: Bell v. Mclntyre (if Bell wins he will probably meet Clarke) leaving Snxellie to play Mclntyre for the latter’s other life. BENEFIELD WINS RINKS. One of the most thrilling finishes in the history of contests resulted in Benefield (St. John’s, Wanganui) capturing the rinks championship at the Dominion bowling tournament today. The weather was brilliantly fine, and the green extremely fast. Benefield’s rink met Stewart’s (Dunedin) in the final. Stewart, however, had two lives in the first game. Benefield had an easy victory by 20 , to 10, but the next game, which followed almost immediately after, was : much more stubbornly ‘ contested. Stewart’s rink showed an all-round improvement and led until the last head. At the end of the thirteenth I head Stewart led 19 to 7, but never scored again. Slowly Benefield crept j n-iarer, and when the last head was ' played Stewart was only two np. Benefield was lying two on the last head, when a shcfc by Stewart gave Benefield three more, making the final sc-ore: Benefield 22, Stewart 19. The rinks were. —McMillan, Rowling, Wight, Benefield (St. John’s) v. Gregory, W. Smith, Bentley, Stewart (Dunedin). Other results were:—
PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Round. Pilkington (Hamilton) 17 v. Benefield (St. John’s) 15. Third- Round. Walker (Auckland) 20 v. Pilkington 19. Semi-Finals. Walker 22 v. Croctor (Renmera) 19. Bell (Hamilton) v. Harraway (Green Island, Dunedin), ,G. Walker and Beil will meet in the semi-final to-morrow afternoon. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. Fourth Round. Smellie (Greer 1 Island Dunedin) 15 v. Walker (Auckland) 13. Bell (Hamilton) 19 v. Mclntyre (Hamilton) 15. Mclntyre still has one life. The draw for the semi-finals tomorrow morning is:— Bell v. Smillie. Mclntyre v. Clarke (Rocky Nook, Auckland).
