CONSTABLE CHARGED.

A DUNEDIN CASE.

Alter several adjournments the perjury charges against Constable George Macartney were proceeded witn to-dav, at the city Police Court. _ Tins was a sequel to the action m the Supreme Court, m November last when J. W. Lockett was awarded substanfcial damages against the Constable, for assault and false ariest. Macuvtnev has been m the . police force for 26 years. It is about twenty years ago .since a Dunedin police constable has been charged with pel jury, and in that case the information was dismissed. _ Jii the Politce Court accused was represented by Mr A. CL Hanlon, who had! defended him in the civil action. Itio Crown Solicitor (Mr i l . B. Adams,) conducted the prosecution; The charges were as follows ; (1) That George Macartney, ot Dunedin Police Constable, did on November 3,192 G, at Dunedin, commit perjury on the hearing of an action brought in the Supreme Court at Dunedin by John "William xiockett, against George Macartney, by swearing firstly that at about half past eleven on the night of July 23, 1926, in Kenmuir Road, Mournington, John William Lockett was very drunk, and that ne then and there arrested John \\ nliam Lockett for drunkenness in a pub/.iC place: and secondly that when coming along the road John William Locket was staggering all over the road anu smelt very strongly of liquor; and thirdly that John William Lockett was then .staggering all over the road and was drunk and thoroughly drunk; ana fourthly that when he had John William Lockett in the watch house and put him in the cell he was still drunk. (2) That George Macartney did on November 3, 1926, at Dunedin, com-, mit perjury on the hearing of an action brought in the Supreme Court at| Dunedin by John William Lockett, j against George Macartney, by swearing ■ that he never at any time struck John j ■ William Lockett a blow of any description, either with his clenched fist, or otherwise, during the struggle be-, i tween himself and John William Lock- > ett on the night of July 23, 1926. _ Lockett gave evidence practically, , the same as ihat given by him in the j : Supreme Court, and before that, m the - Police Court, when he was charged with - drunkenness. , The case was adjourned till 10 J o’clock on Tuesday. - '\rr * xcniMil
