Eight men and women have been convicted of assault on Abbe Des Noyes, of Bourbon, who was stripped and flogged by a number of persons from Bordeaux, who accused him of wizardry. Accused were sentenced respectively to eight-months and six months and fined 10 0 francs, and ordered to pay Abbe Des Noyes a fine of 100,000 francs damages. Accused pleaded that they acted legitimately in defence against the forces of Satan.
The Judge pointed out that the penal code did not provide for such an eventuality.
