A message from Glacier (British Columbia) states that Mr Bruce’s stay in the United States and Canada. ha» provoked widespread interest and comment on the Canberra ceremony. Opinions expressed indicate clearly that these countries regard the opening of Canberra as an important international event. Mr Bruce, when approached concerning the possibility of extending a formal invitation to Foreign Powers to attend the opening ceremonies, pointed out that invitations were being extended to all the Dominions, and while it was extremely desirable to | have foreign nations represented, the •same would involve largo parties, and the accommodation available was insufficient to provide proper hospitality at the opening. In the United States, particularly in official circles in Washington, the new declaration regarding Empire relationship gives .special international significance to the opening of Canberra, and any invitation from Australia would undoubtedly be accepted. Mr Kemiit Roosevelt announces that the Shipping Board Fleet Corporation has assigned two converted motor ships, the West Cusseta and 'West Honaker, of 8000 tons each, operated by the Roosevelt Steamship Company, to tlio Atlantic Australian line, due to increased trade between Australia and the United States.. The West Cusseta will sail on January 22, with a cargo of automobiles, oil and merchandise. The West Honaker will sail in February. Both steamers carry mail and- accommodate passengers. Mr Roosevelt said: “The commerce between the two nations, separated by great distances, needs increased speed, larger cargo capacity and the economy of fuel provided by motor ships. The installation qf Diesel engines in these ships has greatly increased the .cargo space, speed and cruising radius.”
