BEAM SYSTEM OF WIRELESS.
Success of Telephonic Trial’ BRIDGEWATER SPEAKS TO MONTREAL. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assoc«ation. (Received January 11, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 11. Tito Marconi station at Bridgewater established telephonic comniuication with Montreal, using the short wave beam system. There were practically no atmospherics or fading after sunset, as was experienced in tho New York service. The “Daily Express” says that the experts are recommending the beam system, to ensure secrecy . of transAtlantic telephony, though they admit the fan-shaped beam would create a fairly wide band of audibility at somo points. SCOPE EXTENDED TO AUSTRALIA. AMAZING SUCCESS OF TESTS. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 11, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 10. As the result of a three days’ test with tho Australian beam system during the week-end, Marconi’s station maintained a speed of 300 words a minute. They are therefore dispensing with the 6evon-day test, as was the case with Canada, and wiLl hand over the system to the Post Office, on Wednesday, for a weeks test. If this is satisfactory, the Service will open immediately. It is understood that there is no hope of a variation of the decision that charges will be two-thirds of cable rates at the time the contract is signed. It is understood also that M. Marconi has offered to begin wireless telephony tests to Australia within the space of a few weeks, but the Post Office wishes to concentrate ou the perfection of wireless telegraphy first, also to profit by the experience of the complexifies of telephony with America. For instance, yesterday, at a triai test with Ottawa, the London speaker’s words came back as an echo in his ears in a few seconds. ;s \ The elimination of this, also the achievement of complete secrecy, arc problems to be solved. The records show that both South Africa and New Zealand heard talks with America, but only isolated snatches of one voice only. “We are confident that a year hence telephony to Australia will bo in operation as a commercial proposition. It may be erratic at times, but quite workable at certain periods of the day. We think tho short wave-ler.gth will facilitate it. Furthermore, it is a hopeful 1 sign that the short-wave service to Cairo goes on when the trans-Atlantic completely fades out.’’ Tills was the opinion expressed by a high official, who is in daily touch with all experiments.
