Victoria, in the second innings, has lost five wickets lor nil (Hendry 85, Lovo 170 not out, King 33, Hartkopf 101 not out). Victoria seems in a fair way to add another shattering victory to her Sheffield Shield achievements this season. The weather was fine and the wicket good. Hendry resumed his overnight innings, with Love. .Both batted carefully, Love’s runs coming very slowly. The pair carried the tutai towards the 300 mark, when Hendry was stumped off Williams, after he had just previously escaped a catch oil tin: same bowler. King assisted Love t< bring up his hundred, which had taken 200 minutes, and 300 was hoisted foi 279 minutes’ play. With the advent cf Hartkopf, the batting became■ more aggressive, runs mounting up more freely towards the, ekre. Though the play "was never inspiring, changes were frequently rung on the bowlers, whom the batsmen all through treated with respect. Extras added 29. PLUNKET SHIELD SERIES. WELLINGTON BEAT CANTERBURY * By jh—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4. Play in the Plunket (shield match was resumed shortly after 11 a.m. Hollings (45) and Bruce (7), the Wellington not-outs, faced Sandman and Read. Whilst the latter was very steady, runs came freely off Sandman. Just after the third century went up, Brice had a swing at Read, and was clean bowled. 301—9—28. Henderson carried on until Cunningham replaced Sandman, but the last bowler’s first ball beat him all the way, and the innings closed for 308. Sandman’s four overs had cost 36. Hollings again batted really well, and his hatting in this innings should enhance his chanco of a trip to England. Canterbury, requiring 690 to win, opened with Woods and Crawford. After a scratchy start they settled down to good batting, but just when a good partnership seemed likely, Crawford was unlucky in playing on. 50—1—23. Page was not in long before Henderson clean bowled Woods J with a particularly good one, which swung in. 54 —2 —24. Gregory was next, and Brice made rapid changes, as though desirous of giving some of his change bowlers a try-out. Hiddlestun bowled very, well, and Gregory’s penchant for making lps legs a second line of defence brought about his dismissal. 71 —3—9. Patrick was next, but after batting confidently and well for some time, ho played an off ball on to his wicket. 181 —5 —9.
