In the Sheffield Shield match., Victoria in the first innings made 304 against South Australia (Ponsford 10S, Hendry 68, Ryder 34, Hartluipf 29 not out). Halcome took 2 wickets for 60, Grimmott 4 for 101, Lee 3 for 32. South Australia has lost one wicket for 35 (Williams 15 not out). The weather was fine, and the wicket excellent. Bonsfort and AVoodfull opened, but the latter went when only six. With Hendry in, the scoring became lively, and frequent changes in the bowling were- tried without avail, the batsmen, particularly Ponsford, making all appear easy. The partnership added 132 before Hendry lost his wicket. Ryder kept the field moving while he lasted. His score included four sixes. Ponsford with the total at 259 followed quickly. Hartkopf failed to stop the rot in the tail. In the short time remaining before stumps. South Australia lost one wicket. (Received January 3, 8.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 3. South Australia in the first innings made 148 (Williams 21, Pritchard 56, Grimmett 19). Morton took 5 for 70, Blackie 4 for 59. DUNEDIN, January 3. The Plunket Shield match between Otago and Auckland was continued this morning in beautiful weather on a perfect wicket. Otago’s innings was continued by Shepherd and A. Alloo to the bowling of Matheson and Alcott'. Alloo found the latter troublesome, but Shepherd, who was showing glimpses of his best form, played fairly confidently, clouting Alcott to the fence. He received a gift of four from a throw in by Dacre. At 17 Bowley took up the bowling, in place of Alcott, who relieved Matheson. Three of the latter’s four overs had been maidens. Shepherd drove Bowley straight to the fence and square, cut the next for a quartette, and after both had added a single Shepherd again drove the Englishman to the pickets. Fifteen came olf this over, which was the most expensive of the game so far. Alloo brought the second century up after 190 minutes play. Shepherd was then caught by Gillespie, his 46 taking 76 minutes to compile. 202 —5 —46. Alloo who had been at the crease an hour for 10, opened out to Bowley, hitting the coach for three and two. fours. Blamircs, the newcomer, opened with a four olf Alcott, but the scoring became dolorous again until Cooper relieved Bowley, Alloo getting him to to pickets once, and Blamircs twice. The Aucklander got his lengthen the next over, sending down a maiden to Blamires. Matheson went on vice Cooper at 252, Blamires placing Otago 100 ahead by turning the new bowler to the leg boundary. Player at tho other end was very steady, only four being bit off five overs. xAlloo square cut Matheson to the fence, and Blamires snicked a lucky one to leg for a brace, and drove the next to tho

boundary. Bowley came on again, sixteen being hit off the over, Alloo getting most of them with beautiful log, shots. Blamires was at the wickets an hour for his half century. Dacre relieved Player, and Blamires hooked him for a quartette. The next shot, which went dangerously near the bowler’s hand, saw 3(10 hoisted. The last ball before luncheon went rattling to Hie pickets. At the adjournment Otago’s score was 304 for live. Alloo not out 46, Blamires not out 62.

On resuming; Alloo faced Matheson, whose seventh he square cut nicely for a single. Alcott bowled from the other end. Olf the first ball of the next over, Blamires was run out. 306 —6—62. 'The Wellington-Canterbury Piunkct Shield match was resumed to-day in tine weather. 'Hie wicket was in good order.
