BOWLING.

THE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT.

YESTERDAY’S GAMES. The Christmas bowling tournament, which, is, being held under the auspices of the South. Canterbury Bowling Centre, was continued yesterday. Tiie day was, tine. The early morning did nor, promise too. well, but a drying breeze prevailed, and as tho day lengthened, the.;sun strengthened, and the afternoon was warm and genial. it might have been supposed that the greens would bo Induing, with a consequent deadening of tho . bowls, but this was not so; on the contrary, tho greens were drawing well, and they played fast and true. .This being so, it was only to be expected that some good play would be witnessed, and such was certainly tho case, flay started punctually at .8 am., and finished for the day. about 8 p.m. Five greens were in use all ..day—Timaru, ivia Toa, Park west End, and Ashbury—and ' with art umpire on each, and all' arrangements woll planned for 'the day before play started, everything ran- as ; smopthly : as could bo wished. In home previous years, it has been necessary to.uso tho Temuka green for the tournament, but it was inconvenient to send a team away by rail to play, and that is no longer necessary now that Ashbury green is available. Several now faces are noticeable among this year’s visiting players, and it has been made, abundantly clear that the standard of play, is in.no very deteriorating. Indeed, play was so keen in some of the games yesterday, that more than one extra head had to be played in order to decide a tio, and in some games, there was only one point between winners and losers. In one case tho head was burnt in tho last shot, or a second tie-deciding game, and when a third head, was played to find tho winner, victory was gained by one point only. ■ J Morning and afternoon tea was supplied on each green, and was much appreciated. ■The alterations in players made necessary by tho rain were surprisingly few, but in one or two cases, visiting players bad to leave for their homes before the delayed time-table could be completed, and their places were taken by others who were not in the original draw. . ~ The following are results: —
