GIRLS’ HOSTEL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEES A meeting of the Combined Committees of the proposed Y.W.C.A. and Girls’ Hostel was hold in the Y..M.C.A. room, on Tuesday. The chair was occupied by Hr J. P. Newman, and there were present: Mesdamos A. iMi'lvilh Jameson, W. H. Unwin, Edgar Jones, V. CJ. Burns, D. O. Turnbull, Minifie, Turner, W. H. Wallon, R. H. Rhodes and Ford; Hisses Butt, Elwortbv, Wood and Thomson; Messrs A. C- Murray, P. W. Rule, G. Bensiend, J'l. G. Cbtfin, \V. FiVnns, H. Innes-Jones, J. Clelaml, and the hon. secretary (Mr A. Lawrence Gee). Apologies for absence were received from AlesdanKs Benstead, M. B. Johnstone, Archdeacon Julius, Rev. T. W. Potts and Mr Yogelur. Correspondence was received from the private secretary to His Excellency the Governor-General, stating that Her Excellency, Lady Alice Fergusson, regret led being unable to address a meeting of women owing to the numerous engagements during her stay in Tinniru, hut wishing the movement every success.

Mrs E. 1). Mosley wrote resigning from the Committee on account of her removal to Christchurch. —The resignation was accepted with regret.. Three new members were elected to Coni mittec.

Tlie following reports were received from the Committees set up for the special purposes mentioned: (1) Report of the Membership Committee: —Recommendations: (1) That there be two classes of member, viz ‘'Active” (or voting), and “Associate.” (2) That the, minimum fee for members he 5s per annum for those over eighteen years of age and 2s fid per annum for those under eighteen years of age. (3) Membership campaign : It was resolved to approach the various Girls’ Guilds and Associations and request them to bring before their members the question of becoming members of this Association. Also "that, each member of the Committee do his best to procure members for the Association, by drawing up lists of probable members and every other means available. Mr« Jameson and Miss Unit have paid visits to the. leading business firms ol Tinmru with a view to furthering the membership campaign, and report that they were well received by the proprietors and managers of the various firms, who promised to render all the assistance in their power by encouraging the girls employed hv them to become members of the Y.W.C.A. (4) Your Committee has drawn up an “Application Card” which it has pleasure 'LI submit ling the General Committee for approval. Hostel Committee. — (1) Hostel Site and I’lans.—That a subcommittee, consisting of Mesdnmes Unwin. Walton and the lion, secretary, has been appointed to coaler with the and plans of building. (3) Tea for Girls. — Tour committee proposes to provide a tea or teas for girls employed m various large business establishments in the town with the object ot having meetings thereafter and interesting the girls in the proposed hostel scheme. jir 'William Evans has very kindly promised £5 towards providing the proposed' tons, and Mr Nicol, pro prietor of the .Stafford Tea Rooms, has offered to provide a tea at Is per head, half the amount to he donated by him, thereby reducing the cost to Gd pet head. (-J) Finance.-—The members o' your committee have each drawn up lists of possible contributors to the Hostel Fund, and after- the lists have been compared and revised, the Committee will appoint members to interview the persons and firms mentioned, to) Building Site. —Tour Committee has approached Mr Evans with a view to tlie substitution of the section in Church Street, originally donated by him, for the section at the corner of Church and Theodooia Streets. The latter section, however Inis not sufficient deptli for the purpose required, and it will he necessary to purchase from Mr Evans a strip probably 25ft--wide from the adjoining section fronting Church Street. Mr Evans has most generously agreed to substitute the re-'-tions as above,, and offered to sell whatever uuantity of land is required from the adjoining section at £l2 per foot-. Your Committee therefore recommends that the action taken he approved and Mr Evans’s offer he accepted. ((5) Cost of Building.— Recommendation : That the cost, of the proposed Hostel shall not exceed £3500. (7) Business Firms. —Your Committee is endeavouring to interest the business firms in the proposed Hostel, and Mrs Jameson a lid Miss Uatt have paid visits to proprietors and managers with a view to finding out what support will he accorded. So fur they have been well received and their report is very encouraging. (8) Mow Members. —Your Committee has pleasure in recommending Mi's 0. H. Rhodes, Sealoy Street, and Mrs Turner, Wainiataitai, Schoolhouso, as members of the General Committee.
