The weather was fine but dull, and the going a trifle dead for the second day of the Caulfield races. The attendance was fair. In the Hurdles, Altergo was fourth at the beginning, but led over the last two hurdles and won comfortably. He is owned by the Caulfield trainer, Horace Leek. Altergo has won three successive hurdle races. The top weight, Rubus, led round the turn in the Nursery, and won smartly. Rubus is owned by the breeder, Mr Ernest Clark, and was trained by James Scobie. Rubus’s dam, Celosia, won the same race in 1914. In the Herbert Power Stakes, the first three furlongs were run in 4 6 seconds, the next in 49 J seconds, and the last four in "48 2 seconds. There was no pace in the early stages. Pilliewinkie was beaten half a mile from home. The Banker was always in the lead and won narrowly. Cecil Godby trains the winner, who is engaged in both Cups. H. Cairns, The Banker’s rider, completed a double by winning the Moonga Handicap on Metellus, who was always well placed, and finished brilliantly. Metellus is trained by J. Holt. The New Zealand-bred Naos finished with a lightning run in the last furlong, and won the Coongy Handicap from Beedos, who led at the distance. Naos, who is owned by Mr Sol. Green, has 7.0 in the Caulfield Cup. Today’s time, 2.20 J, is half a second outside the Coongy record. Naos is trained by the ex-New Zealander Lou Robertson. DUNEDIN MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY) (Special to the ‘‘Herald.”) DUNEDIN, October 13. The weather prospects for the opening of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, are much better than seemed probable. A lot of rain has fallen during the past week, and the track was so bad yesterday that a proposal was mooted to postpone the meeting to Friday and Saturday, or Saturday and Monday. It did not find favour, however, and the meeting will go on as scheduled. The track has improved slightly under the influence of a drying wind, and though the going will be heavy it will be vastly better than was anticipated. The North Island rider, L. A. Pine, arrived to-night. He will do the riding on Mr G. Gerard’s horses, who ai;e all very well. Paper Boy’s special mission is the Dunedin Guineas, and a decision will be made to-mor-row morning about starting him on the first day. F. E. Jones, C. Emerson and .T. Beale were among the arrivals from Christchurch to-night. Jones will ride Footfall, Front Rank, Star Flight and Bilbo to-morrow, and Front Rank in the Guineas on Saturday. Emerson will do the riding on Mr J. M. Samson’s horses, Mountain Lion, Lava and Money Peer, also on Kilbox; while he will be on Zarisee in the Guineas. Beale’s mounts on the first day will include John Bradbury, Royal Game, Gold Mint, Arrowy, Olympia, and Carnot, while he will handle Dismantle in the Guineas.

Dubious has been scratched for the hurdle race, while Volant, Clontarf and Countersign have been withdrawn from the Electric Handicap. Ravenna is an unlikely starter for the Mosgiel Handicap, in which Mr L. C. Hazlett has Overdrawn. Recent racing has improved Monoxide.

Bonnie Winkie continues to stand up to his work, and he may create a surprise before long. Uleaborg is not engaged in the first day’s hurdle race, in which his stable-mate Gunease is to start, but he may be a runner on Saturday.
