Until his trainer decided not to accompany Indian Sage to RiccartOh in August, the Catmint gelding was in strong demand for the Winter Cup. He went out of favour for the big mile, but backers did not Ipse sight, of him. At Othki, Indian Sage was pounced upon as a good thing for the Ling Memorial, and won with ease. .

The Otaki track was under water in places last week, and the conditions were as bad as possible. The Maori Club will incur a heavy loss on the venture. For future reference, it is worth noting that three of Catmint’s progeny won on the first day, which indicates that the stock of the English horse are partial to heavy going.

A Wellington writer, recently caused surprise by announcing that the price paid for Tommy Dodd when he was sold to a Victorian was oniy £IOO, with a winning contingency of £SOO. A southern paper is responsible for the statement that the price was £I6OQ, with a contingency of £SOO. This reads a more likely story than the one first mentioned.
