Tho British soldier was reinforced by what will ho a. determining factor in tho future of tlie world—that is the spirit of tho English-speaking antipodes behind us. We had a swarm of adverse influences—General Headquarters in France, tho Cbief-of-tbe-Genernl Staff, the liar Office, the First Sea Lord of . the Admiralty, the Grand Qunrticr, the general Cabinet in France, the best organised part, of the British Press. Faint hearts and feeble wills seemed to succeed in making vain the sacrifices of Anzac, I-Telles and Silvia. Only tho dead stuck it out. God bless them forever.” Referring to Sir Alexander Godley’s speech at the unveiling of the New Zealand memorial at Chtmuk Bair, Sir lan Hamilton says that Demosthenes himself coidd not have enhanced the effect of the story told by a soldier who played a leading part.
