Tho Neapolitan bandit,, Domenico Groppo, has been arrested. He confessed to forty-eight murders. The police find that innocent men are now imprisoned lor many of these crimes. . Groppo lias been overtaken by remorse, and sees his victims threaten, ing him with tortures, and lie begs the gaolers to allow him to commit suicide. He has even petitioned tho Government for tho privilege of being the first criminal hanged under the new capital punishment law, saying: Anything is better than the torture ot remorse.” Groppo usually murdered his accomplice to ensure his own safety.
