HUNTING.

meet at waitawa. Hounds met at Waitawa railway station on Saturday. l'or tire first time this season scent was not good 1 the morning, in fact is was practxcaUj non-existent until well after midday, and at the same time it was most noticeable how scarce hares were, in the afternoon everything was changed, there being really an over-supply of hares and scent was good, lhe country if anything, seemed stifter this year, and there were very few fences that any liberty, could be taken with. ✓ it is a 'rood augury for the future to see how well the young horses are going. About thirty have given notice of their intention to obtain qualification tickets, and of that number eighteen have qualified, and six or seven, have only a meet or, two, to complete. All these horses have shaped well, : and some interesting contests. should be sedn .over tho hurdle and steeplechase courses. Throwing off in Mr Harper s, the paddocks - proved blank. until most of Messrs Oliver’s property , was, drawn. A hare, getting up ’ in one ■ of • their creeks, gave a short gallop over three fields, hounds coming to a full stop in Mr Roberts’. Scent was .not lying,at all. Working south into Mr Driscoll s, hounds spoke to a line,' , and the hare was viewed. Running ”■ into Messrs Oliver’s over the big'-boundary fence, she turned sharp to the left and ran north for some distance before swinging right-handed into crop, the field making a detour-to the, left. :--Hounds. earned on, leaving the homestead on the right, down the • terrace, across some .paddocks onto the by-road, and on down to the. main road, where the quarry was lost at the junction of the mam roads a mile or two south of Pleasant Point. Scent was improving in the afternoon, and throwing off in Mr W. Cartwright's, the field were very soon away, running on west into Mr Roberts’,, over a fence with a good high' so’d bank; then, swinging righthanded, hounds drove right through the . small plantation and on across Keane’s road into Mrs Keane’s. Circ- , ling the farm, they ran back on" to tlie road and. into Mr' Cartwright’s, checking . in. a small plantation, but a forward cast into Mr Roberts’ put them right. The pack . carried on to the junction of . the by-roads, .where , again they checked. Tho line was picked up in Mr Clarke’s, running in a loftlianded circle, out on to the road opposite Mr Hall’s. Two or three hares showed up in front of the hares here, one taking the right-handed lino of tho road into. Mr Clarke’s and running south-west to his'boundary, where she made a right-handed circle, which led out on to the road close beside. Mr Clarke’s homestead. A number of liarcs getting up spoilt any chance of continuing on the right line. The best run of the day started in Mr Clarke’s, going into Mr Roberts’, crossing Mj-s Keane’s onto the road, into Mr Roberts’ , and on over the next by-road into Messrs Oliver’s. • Hounds, running with a broast-high scent, earned on into "Mr Harper’s, turned left before coming out onto the main road opposite the- railway station, and across the road into Mr Campbell’s, ; then bearing right into Mr Smith’s and continuing over a few paddocks before heading for the Pleasant PointArowhenua road at Kerry town crossing. Messrs Foley’s, Sullivarfsand Brosnahan’s properties were crossed, then she was lost. This must have been one of the old-fashioned plains hares, as she made straight for the riverbed directly she was hustled off the downs. Those out were:—The Master (Mr O. L.
