Newspapers give prominence to _ the fact that to-morrow is the 100th birthday of Sir George Higginson, “Father of the Guards,” the last survivor of the band of heroic rescuers of the Guards’ Colours at Inkerman. Pie indulges in walks daily, and often visits London on business. He reads without spectacles and wites all his own letters. General Sir George Higginson joined t.ne Grenadier Guards as an Ensign in 1845 and setved in the same regiment for a pel iod of 30 years. He was with ft during the whole of the Crimean War, and was twice promoted for service in the field. He commanded'the Brigade of Guards and Home District from Ts7U to 1884.. and wa s Lieutenant-Gov-ernor of the ’Tower of London from 1888 to 1893. when he retired.
