SILK FROM INSECTS.
GERMAN PROFESSOR’S CLAIM. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. BERLIN June 20. Myriads of cockchafers, May beetles, even lobsters, may in the near futuro be clothing womankind, according to the claims of Professor Hertzog and Dr. Kunicke before the Chemical Institute. They discovered a. process whereby silk thread is manufacturable from tho cbitin organic substance forming the horny part of insects’ Crustacea. They dissolve the chitin, and spray it into the. air, where it forms silk threads of extrnordinary strength. It is suggested that instead of exterminating locusts and similar pests, it will soon pay to breed them.
