HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The annual visit of inspection to tho two High Schools was paid yesterday by members of tho Timaru High School Board, opportunity being also taken to hold tho monthly meeting at the Timaru Girls’ High School. There were present.—Mr J. Bitcliener, AI.P. (chairman), Mcsdamcs W. Raymond, B. 11. Low, and ARissrs H. H. Eraser, J. Gow, L. J. McGregor, S. D. Mason, T. Lyons, \V. D. lie veil, and Dr. L. Tulbot. CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT. The chairman said that lie was incased to meet the members that morning in such pleasant surroundings. Ho considered that periodical visits should bo paid to both schools, so that members could see lor themselves how tlie work was being carried out. ' lie said that tho manner in which tho schools were controlled and the big growth registered in the roll of each -school, should prove very gratifying to all concerned. He considered that the Headmaster and lady Principal should be congratulated on the results attained. Tho chairman also extended to tho re-cloetcd members a welcome back to the Board. He stated that a plan of planting operations had been prepared by Air D. N. Harper in connection with tho Girls’ School. The plan had obviously taken up a good deal of Mr Harper’s time and attention, and tho Board was deeply indebted to him for his valuable services. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. Tho acting Principal of the. Boys’ School, Air E. A. Cockroft, reported that the roll number at present was 346, and the attendance was very regular. Tho contractor had commenced work in regard to tho gymnasium, by shifting the armoury and , wood-work shed. Air Kelly liad resigned from tho .staff in order to take up a. position at 'J'aihape, and his departure would bo regretted by the staff. July ,22nd and 23rd had been pencilled for the dates of the annual concert. If possible, tho concert would be staged on tho following Alonday, as owing to tho building of tho new gymnasium, the school finances -were in a low state. The mower was in a bad state of repair, and it had been suggested by tho janitor that it would bo advisable to purchaso a new machine, the present one having been in service for twelve years.

Arising out of the Principal’s report, it was resolved that the question of tho lawn mower he left in the hands of tho finance committee, with power 1° act. . The question of planting the Girls School was left in the hands of tho finance committee. CORRESPONDENCE.

Air IT. Bolden wrote resigning from the position of janitor at the Girls’ School. —Tho resignation was received. In connection with the erection of banks on ihe Board’s property at Clandeboyo, Air C. E. Brcmner, Geraldine ’county engineer, wrote that he was of the opinion that the erection of banks was of great value to the property. It was resolved that a reduction bo made in the rent of the.settler affected, commensurate with tho extent of land taken for such protective works. 'The Timaru Borough Council udvised that t-hev were prepared to accept the offer of'tho Board as far as it was legally authorised to do so at that stage, and that necessary steps would bo taken to diminish tho width of Hassall Street when the Convent land was transferred to the Council, Ihe letter was received. In regard to the erection of the openair gymnasium, at tho Boys’ High School, tho Department of Education stated that one half of the cost should be met by local contributors. Favourable consideration would bo given to an application for a further subsidy.

FINANCE COMMITTEE. Tlio finance committee reported as follows: — “Janitor, Girls’ School.—Air Bolden, having resigned his position, it was decided that applications bo called at a salary of £135 per annum, with free house, fuel, and lighting, and the Board’s approval of the increased salary is asked for. Forty-one applications were received, and of these, five have been asked to attend the full Beard meeting, to enable a final selection to bo made. “Gymnasium, Boys’ School. —A letter was received from the Department stating that it coulcl not approve a want for the utilisation of endowment income to make up the shortage between the amount in hand and the lowest tender. An application tor subsidy on further donations for the purpose would be favourably eo l “ sidored. In this connection, MU Cockroft had written stating that he could, in all probability, make a further donation out of school funds at a. later date, which would be sufficient for the purpose.
