A BICYCLE THIEF.
SEVEN MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT.
Charged with the theft of two bicycles, one valued at £l2, the property of Eric Lamborn, and one valued at £5, the property of Walter Carlton, Robert Neil McGarvie, whose birthplace was given as New South Wales, appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., at a sitting .of the Timaru Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. Senior-Sergeant Fahey stated that on April 4th, Mr Lamborn left his bicycle outside the place of his employment, and later saw accused pick the bicycle up and make off. He followed accused and took the bicycle off him, the accused asserting that he had bought the machine from a local cycle shop. A complaintwas laid, and when Constable Sampson arrested accused he was found to have a bicycle in his possession that had been stolen from Mr W. Carlton. Inquiries had been made but nothing was known of him. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges, and elected to be dealt with summarily. , . . In reply to his Worship accused said that he did not know why he stole the bicycles. His Worship said that although accused was not altogether mental it would be advisable to have him under supervision. Accused was convicted, and sentenced to four months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and three months’ imprisonment with hard labour respectively, on each charge.
